How to Turn Notifications On or Off from Specific Apps in Windows 8 and 8.1

Toast notifications in Windows 8 and 8.1 are balloon type notifications that appear as a themed bar in the upper right corner of your main display to allow an app to communicate with you whether your are in another app, or on the Start, desktop, or lock screen.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off to show notifications from specific apps for your account in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.


EXAMPLE: App Notification
NOTE: This is an example of a notification from the Calendar app on the desktop and lock screens.

OPTION ONE

To Turn Notifications On or Off from Specific Apps in PC settings


1. Open PC Settings, and do step 2 or 3 below for what Windows 8 you have.​
2. In Windows 8 or Windows RT, click/tap on Notifications on the left side, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)​

3. In Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, click/tap on Search and apps on the left side. (see screenshot below)​

A) Click/tap on Notifications on the left side, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below step 6)​
4. If you have not already, you will need to turn on app notifications to be able to set for specific apps.​
5. On the right side under Show app notifications from these apps, move the sliders right (turn on) or left (turn off) for how you want to set each app. (see screenshot below step 6)​
6. When finished, you can close PC settings if you like..​

OPTION TWO

Turn Notifications On or Off from Specific Apps in Permissions Settings


1. If you have not already, you will need to turn on app notifications to be able to set for specific apps.​
2. From your Start screen, open a modern app (ex: Calendar) that you want to change the notifications permissions for.​
3. While in the app (ex: Calendar), open it's Permissions settings.​
4. Under Notifications (if available) in Permissions, move the slider right (turn on) or left (turn off) to allow this app to show notifications or not. (see screenshot below step 5)​
5. Under Lock screen (if available) in Permissions, move the slider right (turn on) or left (turn off) to allow this app to run in the background and show quick status on your lock screen or not. (see screenshot below step 5)​

6. When finished, you could click/tap anywhere within the app to close the Permissions flyout, or close the app if you like.​
