Win8.1 64bit, Windows 10 TP on VMWare Player

I was prompted to install VMWare tools during the install of the Player. Didn't have to go looking for it at all.

I think that is just copying it onto the host machine. You still have to apply it in the guest.

Absolutely, especially if your guest is a Linux distro. Then you have to issues commands at the command line. Here is an example where I explain it for Mint.

I've followed the guide in 1st page, step by step as I never used VMware before. Very nice, everythig perfect, Win8.1u3 works like a charm

Now I have to learn how to save my work, so how to make a "snapshot" useful in case of a compromised SO, so that I can overwrite in 3 seconds

Unfortunately the free VMWare Player doesn't have the ability to take snapshots. If you need a free VM that does you will need to use VirtualBox instead. It's use is very similar.

Just make a copy of the virtual partition folder. That's like an image.

Yes that works. It's just not as quick or convenient as a snapshot.

OK thanks! I already know virtual box, but unfortunately I'm not able to install latest ver on my Win8 (setup freezes). I'll just make a copy of the folder, no problem... I can multitask myself doing something else for those 2 minutes

another idea could be to use an imaging sw like Acronis...

When I open my VM then go into Player/Manage on the Command bar at the top of the screen, all I get is the option to REinstall VMware tools, which makes me think I have got it already.
Maybe I did install it but either forgot or didn't realize what I was doing. Wouldn't be the first time .

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

I've set the VM to check for tools updates automatically now, so that should sort it anyway I guess?

I seem to remember that for some OSs the tools are installed automatically during installation. Maybe Windows 8 is one of those but It won't hurt to reapply it just in case.
