( of course Windows loads fine under Secure Boot and UEFI) I had forgotten the the HP recovery disks do not function as repair disks so I forgot to make those also.

I also read that if you have an HP system with preinstalled Windows 8, you will not have the ability to create a system repair disk from Windows as the above shows, only the HP recovery disks. I don't know how true that is because i didn't try it before removing the recovery partition.

Perhaps another option is to get a Windows 8 install disk and use the recovery options in there? ( I do have access to my product key)

Will DaRT 8 (Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset) running from a dvd do this? Microsoft DaRT - Diagnostics and Recovery Tools, Repair | TechNet

    Hello Dark Rider,

If you have a Windows 8 installation disk, then you could use OPTION SEVEN in the tutorial below to boot to the Startup Options...

Startup Options Menu - Boot to in Windows 8

.... then select "Troubleshoot" to be in the "System Recovery Options" screen in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below. This is what a System Repair Disc will take you to.

I don't currently have a normal Windows installation disk, just the HP recovery disks that wont work for this. Where can I download a normal Windows Installation Disk? Unlike Windows 7, it doesn't seem like Digital River is offering the downloading of the ISO's.

Could I use the free Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day evaluation version?

You could try and download a Windows 8 ISO using the method in the tutorial below, but I'm not sure that it'll work since you have an OEM product key instead of a retail key.

Why can't EasyBCD be used; it has the capability of creating a new MBR and rebuilding it.????

On Windows 8 64 bit, you are now forced to use a USB if you attempt to create a recovery CD/DVD via Control Panel, Recovery. There's no option (as above) to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD or DVD instead' as in the graphic above. But you can do it with Windows key+R and type recdisc. Hope this is useful.

Hello Nigel, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure what you mean. Using step 3 is still available in both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8.

It's recdisc and not recdisk though.

First of all, sorry about recdisk (wrong) versus recdisc (right). If an administrator/editor/senior member can correct that please it'll save confusion.

Thank you Brink for giving me the opportunity to clarify about creating a recovery disk via Control Panel, Recovery. On page 1 of this thread, i.e. System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8, paragraph 3. E) the screenshot shows the 'Recovery Drive' screen, subtitled 'Connect a USB flash drive', with the option below to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD/DVD instead'. My screen (up to date Windows 8) is titled 'Recovery Drive', subtitled 'Select the USB flash drive' and doesn't have the option to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD/DVD instead'. I'll put the screen in and hope it transmits to everyone:-

(F:\ the Toshiba drive is just an external drive).

This doesn't surprise me as the book Windows 8 in depth by Knittel and McFedries page 769 has the same screen and talks only of a recovery drive on USB. They didn't have your extra knowledge about recdisc! Originally, it made me curse and buy a USB stick, as I find them less reliable than DVDs and more expensive, so I was pleased with your tip.
Any ideas please? I have tried the screen via copy and paste - it disappears, so I've attached it as a doc and attempted to create a jpg file of it and insert that, but the image on screen is tiny...
    Regards,
    Nigel

    Nigel,

If you have a USB flash drive connected, then you will not see the Create a system repair disc with a CD or DVD instead link at step 3E. Please disconnect any USB drive, and start over to see if you see this link afterwards at this step. You can close the window to cancel it.

Thank you Brink for looking into this. I still don't get an option to create a CD or DVD recovery disk via the menus: Control Panel, Recovery, only via recdisc. For the screen below I detached my Toshiba external drive connected via USB, restarted Windows 8 and went into the menus I've just mentioned. This is the screen I get:-

For the record, I'm on standard Windows 8, not Windows 8 Pro, Enterprise or RT.
In a further twist, I tried a USB stick repeatedly. File Explorer finds it immediately as normal and can see the contents, Recovery cannot see it! ...and keeps asking for a USB stick to be inserted.
    Best regards,
    Nigel

    Nigel,

I have this option in all Windows 8 editions. I just doubled checked in a Windows 8 (standard) virtual machine.

Is this on your desktop in your specs, or another PC?

Do you have a CD/DVD connected?
