Even more specific of a question, can you MANUALLY add the Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos as well as custom libraries into the This PC folders?

    Hello Andy,

Sure you could manually add any folder you like into This PC. It's just a bit of work to do so per folder. If you like, you could use the free program below to make doing it easier.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to add a specific library to the folders in This PC as it wants ONLY use folders, which is a shame. The idea of having user folders was nice, but the execution is a bit flawed as libraries should have been allowed as something to add to that part of This PC.

Anyways, I've figured out a simple workaround solution. I personally just need the Videos library as I'll have a couple drives just dedicated for video files. Just arrange your library with the folders you need in it, and simply copy over the shortcut to the respective folder. In my case, I placed the Videos library shortcut into the Videos folder of This PC. It's just a single click extra, but ends up basically doing the same action.

On a random side note, I'm guessing the reason why Libraries were hidden by default was because a huge chunk of Windows 7 PCs were laptops, and when you have a laptop you mainly use just that local disk drive. Laptop hard drive sizes usually nowadays are about 500-1,000 gigs in size, so the need to use the libraries feature is kind of redundant. Even if you were to use a tablet PC and have an external hard drive, you'd mostly just navigate into the external drive's file structure versus setting up a library. Libraries is more of a feature intended to be used more on desktops that have multiple hard drives full of goodies.

    Andy,

Yeah, I'm still trying to find a way to add a library to This PC, but I'm not having any luck so far.

We can add the Libraries folder though.

    Hi,

Thanks for the tip, it works very well.

After the latest batch of updates, the folders returned and I had to apply this solution again.

Also, there is a glitch with these folders where they temporarily reappear on the left hand side of This PC.

    How to reproduce it:

    Go to This PC
Click on, for example, "Downloads" folder under Favorites
    Click on Back arrow
    Click on Forward arrow

The "Downloads" folder will reappear on the left hand side of This PC. When you close and reopen This PC, it disappears.

Thanks for the shortcut to removing All "Folders" in 64 bit 8.1.
It's a very quick and welcome fix.
Out of interest I find that the folders reappear from time to time, I think after installing certain Windows updates, then I have to get rid of them again. It's not a great problem but I wonder why this would happen.

    Hello Peter,

Could be the update resetting the registry entry for it back to default causing it to show up.

Yeah, I noticed that Windows Updates reset it too, so I just keep a copy of Brinks 'Remove All Folders' reg file on my computer and run it when they return.

It's annoying when Microsoft do this, I find they keep turning System Protection (System Restore) back on with Windows Updates too.
