Windows 8.1.1 Remove Folders from "This PC" - Quirks

So, I've tried the tutorial. It "works".
However, I've noticed that whenever I modify or use one of the main user folders that would ordinarily be under "This PC", they appear there AFTER the registry hack recommended in the tutorial- it's only temporary, but I was hoping to banish them from that section entirely.

Does anyone know if this can be done, or is it built in?

Hello CanadianVice, and welcome to Eight Forums.

That usually happens if the computer wasn't restarted after merging the .reg file from the tutorial. Restart the PC to see if that may sort this for you.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Hmmm.... certainly something to try. Would it influence anything that in their current state, they only come back while that particular explorer window is open? If I close it, they're not there until I add it again. At any rate, I'll try the restart thing and get back.

Is it really that integral to restart the computer? I always thought just restarting explorer was enough .

Yeah, restarting the computer is the only way to fully apply the changes made in the registry. Otherwise you'll see the glitch you have until the PC is restarted.

So, the issue presents itself rather strangely. Of perhaps it's just the built in functionality of the OS, I don't know.
Anyhow, I used the keys provided in this tutorial (the All Folders 64x.reg) and it does remove them, but the temporary issue still raises if I make any modification to one of the User directories (add a file, create new folder, etc.)

However, after a period of time it disappears again. I made sure to restart as you suggested, but no luck :\

In case it's relevant, I'm using a few other reg tweaks:
Onedrive Navigation Pane position (I like to maintain it above Libraries) index (in DEC) 66 --> 65
Libraries Navigation Pane Position (Above "This PC") index (in DEC) 8? --> 66 (I don't recall, it was 80 something)

    Both done using index adjustments.

Then there's remove Navigation Pane from Navigation.

That's all the tweaks I've employed.

I'll have to do some more playing with it to see if one of the other tweaks you made may be causing them to still temporarily show up with modifications like that.

For now, does closing and reopening explorer make them go away again when they appear?

Closing the Window does get rid of it. It only ever appears in the current explorer window where I made the modification.

Also, where I said remove nav from the nav pane, I meant network. If you like I can copy out the reg keys as I have them for you.

Note to onlookers: DO NOT use the attached Registry keys. They're not confirmed working.

Also, ignore the Wow6432node version of the Lib index. Turns out that isn't necessary and actually breaks libraries in the open dialog.

For the record, the original index values are (in DEC) Lib: 84, Onedrive: 66.

I've noticed that the folders tend to come back after Windows updates. I enabled Auditing on those keys to see what was accessing them, but gave up after a while of waiting for more updates to show up. What I've done for now (which I'm not sure will work), is set the permissions for the user "Everyone" to read access only, and removed all other permissions.
