Repair Install Windows 8

  1. #90

    Hi:

Thanks for the quick reply. As I recall I purchased a key for Windows 8 and did the install on-line. Then I did the on-line update of windows 8.1 I made a dvd from a windows 8.1 professional iso file. I am not sure where I got that from. My Windows is genuine however. I don;t recall but when you install from on-line I don;t think you get a copy of the iso. Not sure. Any advice at this point? Thanks again.
Update - Found a way to download the Windows 8.1 iso from MS. In the process. I think I was using the Window 8.0 DVD. I will post back

OK - Found the the 8.1 iso I downloaded as part of the install. it gave me the same result - option :NOTHING. I downloaded a new 8.1 iso file from MS but interestingly although it displayed my correct product key , the resulting iso file would not accept my key as valid. So as far as I know I used the iso that I used to upgrade to 8.1. Any other ideas? Thanks again for the help. The tutorial is very clear and explicit.

If you have a Windows 8 product key, then that could be why.

Did you add Media Center by chance? If so, it'll change your key.

Use the link below to enter a generic 8.1 key to do the repair install with to see if you are able to keep everything. If so, then you can change the key to your 8.0 key when finished.

Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

Update. Using the generic key I do get the other options. Thank you for that suggestion. I will attempt the repair tomorrow.

    Thanks again!

    Windows 8.1

I followed the tutorial completely but have been unable to do a repair install. It doesn't give me the option to preserve windows settings etc., only keep personal files or nothing. I remember the same thing happened when I was trying to upgrade to Win 8 from 7, but I was able to make the option appear by using some tool which just unhides it. I can't, for the life of me, seem to find it. This was way back in October 2012. My Windows install is currently in a really bad shape so I figured a repair install would help. I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 over 8.1.

Hello Zorua, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you currently sign in to Windows 8.1 with a Microsoft account, then your personal settings and apps should automatically sync if it was left turned on.

Apps - Install Metro Apps from Windows 8 Store

If for any reason your modern apps to not get synced, then you can also quickly reinstall them from the "Your apps" list in the Store. Desktop apps would have to be reinstalled though.

Sync Your Settings - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

    Hope this helps for now,
    Shawn

    Thanks for the quick reply!

It isn't my Windows 8 apps that I'm worried about, my installed programs are where my concern lies. I have a lot of games and I really don't want to reinstall them all. Is there anything I can do to make it show the option to let me keep everything? The same installer when run on my laptop does that with no issues.

Is there any differences between what you have installed and the installation media? They must be identical.

Hm...possibly. I have Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 WMC installed, but I did the registry hack to pass it off as Pro. Didn't work sadly.

The installation media is a bootable USB. The .iso was obtained from the official installer.
