Airplane Mode On or Off Shortcuts - Create in Windows 8

How to Create Turn On or Off Airplane Mode Shortcuts in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
You can turn Airplane mode on or off in Windows 8 to enable or disable all wireless radio devices (ex: Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth) at once in your PC or device.

This tutorial will provide you with shortcuts that you can pin or use where you like to quickly "Turn On Airplane Mode" or "Turn Off Airplane Mode" with a single click in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note
You will only have the Airplane mode feature available on a mobile Windows 8 PC or device (ex: laptop, tablet, mobile phone, etc...) that has a wireless network connection (ex: Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth).

EXAMPLE: "Turn On Airplane Mode" (left) or "Turn Off Airplane Mode" (right) shortcuts
NOTE:
These are just what the icons of the shortcuts look like.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what Windows you have installed.

2. For Only Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.
Airplane_Mode_Turn_On-Off_Shortcuts.zip
download

3. For Only Windows 8.1 Update
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.
8.1_Update_Airplane_Mode_Turn_On-Off_Shortcuts.zip
download

4. Save the .zip file to your desktop.

5. Open the .zip file, and extract (drag and drop) both the Turn On Airplane Mode.exe and Turn Off Airplane Mode.exe files to your desktop.
NOTE: These are standalone .exe files that have digital signatures and do not install or add anything to your computer.

6. You can now move the .exe files to where you like to use them at, then Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, add to Quick Launch, or create shortcuts from the .exe files.

NOTE: If you create shortcuts from the .exe files, then you could also assign a keyboard shortcut to each shortcut.

That's it,
Shawn

Hello Keene, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sort of. It uses an Autoscript that simulates the keystrokes used to do this normally. :)

Thanks for the shortcuts. Just wanted to say that for me, the right hand side black bar that shows the networks, stays open and I have to click on the desktop for it to go away. Can you add this feature that would close the bar to the shorcuts?

That is normal. You can just click/tap anywhere on an empty area on the other side to close the Networks flyout bar. :)

Hello zygote, and welcome to Eight Forums.

They are working fine in Windows 8.1 for me.

Is you PC a mobile PC (ex: laptop, tablet) and not a desktop?

Do you have a wireless network?

When you click on the Network icon at the right corner of your taskbar to open the Networks flyout, do you have an Airplane Mode On/Off setting at the top like below?

Hello!

I'm looking at this for a solution at work with an extremely locked down device (I'll spare you the details..) but basically, when I run this on Windows 8.1 it simply opens up the charms bar and doesn't actually flip Airplane mode on or off in my testing.

Did it automatically handle this in Windows 8 - what I'm wondering is, is if there is an API that can be called in some manner to flip the airplane mode switch.. possibly without even opening up the charms bar at all (in a situation where the device may not even allow the charms bar to open or be locked down by a third party program).

I'm just looking for ideas here, this was one of the first programs I found during my research but it doesn't quite seem to do what I'm looking for, but it's really close, and with a little more information I might have a solution - do you know about the status of the applications behavior with Windows 8.1 - because it seemed like both shortcuts essentially did the same thing, except had different icons :)

Thanks much,

Keegan

Hello Keegan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It looks like Windows 8.1 Update as added a new View Connection Settings option above the Airplane mode setting now.

I'll add a new version of the shortcuts that'll work in Windows 8.1 Update later today, and will post back when they are ready. :)

Brink, I have Windows 8.1 update as well. However, running the Turn Airplane Mode On exe just opens the Settings charm and highlights Personalization, then stops. Any ideas? (Great idea, by the way.... Microsoft should have included this as a Start Screen option)
