    refresh

I have Win 8.1 but no recovery partition. I have the dvd from the 8.1 iso but only an 8 product key.

If I use the 8.1 dvd with refresh while in 8.1 will I refresh 8.1 or revert to 8?

    Hey Peter,

If you have Windows 8.1 installation media connected, then you should refresh to 8.1 as well.

And your 8 product key works for 8.1 also
I don't think you'll need to reenter it though using this tutorial

Nope. You won't be asked for your product key when doing a refresh.

I keep getting an error that says " must use an elevated prompt"

Cmd prompt = start> scroll to the right to black icon then RIGHT click it and select run as admin.

    Thanx!

Now that I got that done, How do I use it?

New territory for me. Do I need the original media. My computer updated to 8.1`automatically!

First time I ever used Administrator Commend Prompt!! Or even heard of IT! Been in computers before there were com putters!

We get so soon old & so late Smart (old German proverb) I am 85.

If it was update through the store, you are better getting new media.

There is another update due soon. There are whispers the average Joe may be offered an iso. It is possible. I have made enough suggestions that MS should do that - they need all the goodwill they can get.

    Hi Tully
I turned 74 today and hope you adopt the ,"One day at a time theory." I know I seem like a kid to you but cancer has taken my organs so we are on the same playing field.
Regrading the command prompt, there are times you will need it to create or do something. Like when I run SFC to see if my files are ok I right click the black iconI told you about. Don't do this sfc as I was just giving you an example. Other times you will be asked to do it and now you know where it is and what to do.

Refresh Windows 8
I have read the tutorial (Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image) . Would I not get the same result if I created a Disk and Partition Backup using a program like Acronis or Easeus? That way I hope to keep all my initial system, personal files and third party applications.
