I should have known it was too easy . Yesterday when I closed down the system started to install 62 updates. It didn't take more than 10 or 15 minutes before shutting down, but when I checked today most of these had failed, and I had to reinstall more than 50, which has taken almost 4 hours to complete.

The updates were mostly dated from August 2014 to Feb 2015, though a few were even earlier dates. They included that 750mb one from a few months ago.

Since I had Windows Update set to automatically install updates, I navely assumed it had already taken care of these (especially as the updates were not listed when I looked, and in fact didn't show up until about 36 hours after I installed the new OS). Plus I took a new copy of the iso just a couple of weeks ago and had believed it to already include many of these updates.

So to anyone doing this install - watch out for those pesky updates

And now my antimalware keeps telling me programs have changed and asking me to update rules (must get this automated!).

Thanks to Shawn and @alpha for the explanation of the Recovery partition.

It looks like the Media Creation Tool does not include Update 3. I was hoping they would update that download so it did include it.. My MSDN ISO's now include update 3.

Update 3? I didn't know there was an update 2!

Can you provide a KB or other reference - I understand you're referring to MSDN ISOs, just wondering about the normal channels.

    Thanks,

    Bill

I do believe it was this one, also referred to as the November rollup. Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850) from Official Microsoft Download Center

EDIT: MSDN just lists the ISO's as Windows 8.1 with Update. They put new ones up on 12/15/2014, Dec 15th last year.

Update 2 and 3 are what some bloggers are calling the Update Rollups that MS released. MS does not refer to them as Updates 2 & 3. Also there was not an Update 1, MS called it "8.1 Update".
The newest rollup was in Dec and don't call it Update 4.

Why not? It makes perfect sense to refer to them as update 2,3 etc.

Makes more sense to call them by their real names:

    8.1 Update (KB2919355)
    Aug 2014 Update Rollup (KB2975719)
    Nov 2014 Update Rollup (KB3000850)
    Dec 2014 Update Rollup (KB3013769)

Added KB# is anyone needs them.
