Since you upgraded with the free Windows 8.1 update from the Store in Window 8, you would have to reinstall Windows 8, then update to 8.1 whenever you wanted to do a clean install.
So, if I correctly understand you, there is no way to obtain an 8.1 ISO that can be installed over 8.0 (which I can restore).
Or, better still, be installed over 8.1 PV. The only alternative is to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 via the STORE? Best
If you purchase Windows 8.1 separately through the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant, then you could get a Windows 8.1 ISO file since this would be a full retail copy of Windows 8.1. Of course, if you purchased a retail box of Windows 8.1, then you could also create an ISO from the DVD as well.

When you update to Windows 8.1 via the Store, this is only and update from your Windows 8, so it's still using your Windows 8 product key. That's why you would have reinstall Windows 8 and update to 8.1 again anytime you wanted to clean install. Of course, you could just create a system image after updating to 8.1, and use it whenever you wanted to restore an image instead of starting all over.

But of course. What I want to do is a 8.1PV overinstall, using the Win 8 key. And apparently that's not possible - with the only alternative to real-time (store) upgrade to 8.1RTM from 8.0 and REINSTALL all apps. Unless one wants to brave the torrents.
What a pain in the a--.

    Borgus,

Sorry, but not without a Windows 8.1 product key. A Windows 8 key will not activate a clean install of Windows 8.1.

I would recommend to use system images.

Could we use the "leak" method, using the leaked key to install then activate with Windows 8 key?

Not sure what you mean by leaked key.

You can use the default key to install from the iso, then use your purchased 8.0 key to activate.

I don't think you can upgrade the 8.1 preview unless you have an 8.1 key.

There is an entire thread about downloading the iso and what to do with it here: How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

I think that Borgus wanted to upgrade 8.1 preview, which is a different thing.

Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center

I used the store to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro with WMC, and apart from replacing my local account with my Microsoft account - I guess that was my fault, it went OK generally.

I wanted to get the ISO in case I need to reinstall cleanly, so I followed the Tutorial steps to download WindowsSetupBox.exe.

I already have Windows8-Setup.exe from last year when I upgraded to Windows 8, from the installed OS on the machine I had bought in August 2012.

When I ran WindowsSetupBox.exe, it would not accept the Windows 8 product key I received from the email in October 2012, when I purchased the upgrade via Microsoft.

Unsurprisingly it also did not accept the WMC upgrade key.

It did however like the generic key xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-PDG4W that Belarc Advisor reports for Microsoft Internet Explorer, saying "Your product key is fine. Press next when you're ready"

But on the next screen I get Windows 8.1 setup, and also Windows 8 setup when I tried it telling me "Windows 8.1 isn't available for download. Sorry, Windows 8.1 isn't available for online purchase in the country/region you're in."

I've seen recommendations to run setup for 8.0 in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3, which does not work with 8.1 setup. Any ideas?

    Hello fafhrd,

    Nar, it's not surprising.

    warning   Warning
You will only be able to enter a Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product key.

A Windows 8 product key will only get you a Windows 8 ISO file.

A Windows 8.1 product key will only get you a Windows 8.1 ISO file.

You will not be able to enter a Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack product key. These are considered to be an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8/8.1 with. You could use Add Features to add the Window Media Center Pack or Windows 8 Pro Pack again after Windows 8/8.1 is finished installing.

Apologies that I'm probably not answering the question (certainly not the part about ISOs) ... but in case it helps anyone, I have done the following:

    • clean installed the 8.1 Preview using the 8.1 Preview ISO and the default Preview product key
    • upgraded in the Windows Store to 8.1 Final
    • Windows boots up with no problem and takes me through the rest of setup
    • input my 8.0 Product Key and activated 8.1 successfully.

The 8.0 Product Key was a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade key that had previously been used on the same machine before I wiped it with the Preview.

So you can upgrade the 8.1 Preview using an 8.0 key - I've done it!
