Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

  1. #370

Downloaded file/files path similar for me:

    Code:
    "C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\a11a8b48-dd6c-404d-94a3-7f06d5884991\MediaCreationToolExpanded\WindowsInstallationMediaCreationTool\Download\BITEBE7.tmp"
It wiped out the existing C:\ESD and created a new, empty one so far.

Edit: C:\ESD\Windows was populated during the file expansion phase, then emptied after the iso was created.

The big bonus for some is now you can get the Single Language version right from Microsoft without having to resort to other less reputable sources. That is one version I can't even get on MSDN. All you guys with OEM installs can now get an ISO to do clean installs with. This new download doesn't ask for a product code.

One thing though, as this thread is a Sticky, it won't be obvious to some that there is a new easy to get the ISO download. I only know because I was in the original thread where it was found, and subscribed to this thread. Those that already read the tutorial may not give it a second look see.

@alpha Is this equivalent to the OEM Windows 8.1 Update ISO, that was not available previously?

So now I can do a clean install with Option 1 in my machine?

If you originally had 8.1 preinstalled on your OEM PC, then you will be able to with Option One now since the 8.1 key would be embedded in your UEFI firmware settings.

Otherwise, you may have to install with a generic 8.1 key, and activate later with your OEM key.

I haven't tried any of these ISO's yet. I assume it's 8.1 with update 1. It should be the same procedure as always for a clean install. Make your bootable media, boot from it and follow the menu's. I may try one before the day is out though. I don't have any PC's with embedded 8.1 OEM keys so I can't test that part of it. My laptops only have 8.0 Core keys. I'll be installing 8.1 Pro and adding Media Center. If your wanting to activate with your 8.0 key you'll have to install with one of the generic 8.1 keys and then activate with your 8.0 key, Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

This new installation media also accepts Windows 8 product key. Also the UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8 product key is automatically detected.

Take a look at this post: How to clean install Windows 8.1 if you have an OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key?

I can confirm what Genet posted. I just did a clean install on my laptop of 8.1 Core from the new download link. I was not prompted for a key and it activated online automatically. I ran the ShowKey.vbs before and after and it used my OEM embedded code. This is a Windows 8.0 code not an 8.1 code.

I installed Core because I wanted to test my OEM key to make sure it would work. I was expecting to have to use a generic key to install with but was pleasantly surprised.

I used the create USB thumb drive option and installed in UEFI mode from that. The thumb drive was formatted in Fat 32. It wouldn't use my Sandisk thumb drive though. I think its because they are set as fixed disk instead of removable media. It was a 8 GB thumb drive. I then tried one of my 4 GB Kingstone drives but it reported it as too small. I ended up using an 8 GB Kinstone Dat Traveler drive.

Now its time to upgrade to Pro and add Media Center.

Yes Shawn I've a Windows 8.1 OEM pre installed laptop. So the new Windows Media creation tool will work for clean install, that's really very good to hear for 8.1 OEM sufferers.

Genet, I'll always go through the link you gave in which you've beautifully explained it - thank you very much

Kerry , so this new Windows Media creation tool is the new official Windows 8.1 OEM ISO also, am I correct?
From now onwards , no work around is needed to install 8.1 in 8 laptop - we can directly install 8.1 in 8 laptops without any genetic keys needed, with the help of this tutorial, Am I right?

Thanks for the helpful advice guys

Yes, it looks like no generic key is not needed. I installed 8.1 Core and it used my 8.0 Core embedded key. I wasn't prompted for one and didn't enter one. I just upgraded to Pro and then added Media Center so Add Features works too. I haven't confirmed if this is 8.1 with update 1 yet, I see a power and search button in the upper right corner of the Start Screen so I think it is with update 1.

This is the download to have IMHO. I'm just wondering what would have happened if I had use the 8.1 Pro download to install with? Would it prompt for a key or maybe install only Core?
