Hey Vic and Brink. So my post earlier is regarding option 1. With the new file Windows provided, the option 1 no longer works. The new installation file ALWAYS prompts for a CD KEY, even if you started and stopped with install of 8.
I still need to test Option One with the new ISO to help verify when the new ISO is finally finished downloading.

Are you stopping the Windows 8 download at the correct time at step 4 and 5 in Option One?

If so, then see if doing what's in the blue note box under step 7 and starting over may help.

Yeah I tried all kinds of trouble shooting methods including the ones you mentioned. Getting someone else to verify would be helpful. Not sure where to go from here in getting a clean 8.1.

Well, it looks like you can't download a Windows 8.1 Update ISO using a retail Windows 8 product key from the old soon to be gone Option One copied here below for posterity.

It appears that folks will have to download their Windows 8 ISO, and update to Windows 8.1 Update via the Store instead now.

That's bad.. I don't even have windows 8.1 iso now. Are we sure we can't download 8.1 iso legally using Windows 8 key? Why can't MS make iso files available through digital river like before?

Brink, I just had another go at the US site in option one. I skipped Windows 8.0 and went right for 8.1 using and 8.1 Pro TechNet key. I'm downloading right now. Yeah the new file is OSGS14-WindowsSetupBox-32bitand64bit-English-4141408.exe, I can see the old file WindowsSetupBox.exe in my downloads folder with it.

EDIT: I guess I should mention that this is on my man desktop PC that is already running 8.1 Pro update with Media Center.

I see some files and folders dated 3/18/2014 and the sources folder is dated 5/15/2014. Other than installing it I'm not sure what else to look at to confirm update 1 is included. I'm thinking it is though. I'm guessing by the time I post this brink will have run it in VM. I'll wait and see anyway. I just got up and haven't finished my first cup of coffee. It's to early in the day for this kind of stuff.

If you have upgraded to media Center and used a utility to retrieve your key from the Windows registry, it will pull out your Media Center key. I mention this just in case you didn't dig out your paper copy of your Product Code.
Thanks, you two for the help.

Finally getting back to this. I was about to burn a mirror of my system after the Update one and that I got my system set the way I like it, but then I ran into a problem with my monitor or video going black after I wake the system out of sleep. Ill start a thread to see if I can resolve that problem first, then burn a mirror. After I get that accomplished Ill try the suggestions you two mentioned.

Yep, the ISO file downloaded from the OSGS14-WindowsSetupBox-32bitand64bit-English-4141408.exe file is indeed for Windows 8.1 Update. I tested the ISO in a VM to verify.

Al right, that's good to hear. I do custom install thumb drives for each of my PC's. I use a PID.txt file to enter the product code automatically and only ever install Pro with those thumb drives. I also roll in the OEM info etc for the system page. My TechNet 8.1 (multi edition) update ISO's won't fit on a 4 GB thumb drive but these will. That means I can go back to the 4GB thumb drives I used in the past that were sitting around doing nothing. Then I can reuse my current 8 GB drives for something else. I'll likely also have tested the new download out before the day is out. My wife's Acer laptop is still running the factory 8.0 install. The Store upgrade to 8.1 fails and I haven't bothered to find out why knowing I want to do a clean install anyway. Now's my chance.

Brink earlier you mentioned "Well, it looks like you can't download a Windows 8.1 Update ISO using a retail Windows 8 product key". Is that true? I used an 8.1 key just because I have them and it saves a couple of extra steps. I may have a go at downloading 8.1 Core latter with an 8.0 key, I've got some domestic errands to take care of first though. Got to keep the wife happy.

Yeah, I tested it last night, and unfortunately the old trick copied above doesn't work to let you download a Windows 8.1 Update ISO with a Windows 8 key.

The new OSGS14-WindowsSetupBox-32bitand64bit-English-4141408.exe file doesn't work with it like the old WindowsSetupBox.exe file did.
