You can't download without a legitimate retail product key. Note that an OEM product key not work.

    edit:

How to download and clean install Windows 8.1 if you have an OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key. -> link

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.
    or
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.
You can Order Lenovo Recovery Disks from here:
    Lenovo Support - Home (US)
    Click on Parts & Accessories.
    or

That means paying for something which I've always been able to produce free with previous operating systems.

Can somebody help me with this idea of changing the OEM key to my product key mentioned in the Belarc footnote in my post 107. Would this give me a retail key I could use to download an ISO? Also in the bottom right hand of the Control Panel/System window there is a link to "Change product key". Is this similar to the Belarc process? Would it give me a retail key even if I've never had one?

You will need to buy a Retail Key or OEM DVD & Product key.

    OEM:
    Microsoft Windows 8.1 Operating System - OEM - 64 Bit | WN7-00614

    Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro Operating System - OEM - 64 Bit | FQC-06949

Brink, Theog and Genet - thanks for the advice. Without paying for anything, I can set my laptop back to factory defaults - Windows 8 - and then download the 8.1 update again.

Again, can anybody clarify the idea of changing the product key I mentioned previously?

    Hey Alan,

If you have a retail Windows 8 or 8.1 product key, then you could use OPTION ONE or OPTION TWO in the tutorial to just enter it to download an ISO file without having to change the key for your installed Windows.

This wouldn't work if you only have an OEM key.

Rumor is that the Windows 8.1 Update ISO won't be available until the 30th of this month.

I will try this download again at some point to see if it was added, looks like I'll wait till after the 30th. It's just about everywhere else now. It was released to MSDN early and it looks like its added to the 8.1 Windows Store Upgrade.
