I don't know what to tell you, I've only ever used Rufus once, about an hour or so ago. That's why I posted what I observed. I haven't tested the thumb drive yet either.

So hey, I used my sisters laptop which has w7 and it worked, so, for the future generations, it doesn't give you the option for GPT yif you are using w XP 32 bits! :P

As I understand it, in order to use RUFUS to create a UEFI compatible (GPT) installation USB, the PC must be running:

    WinXP 64bit or Vista 64bit or Windows 7 32bit or 64bit or Windows 8 32bit or 64bit.

You cannot do so on the 32bit versions of either WinXP or Vista.

I know RUFUS works on Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit as I used my former employers work laptop to create my very 1st Windows 8.0 Pro 64bit UEFI installation USB drive using RUFUS about 6 or so months ago. Since then I've used a PC with Windows 8.x Pro 64bit.

Personally the minimum/oldest version of Windows I would use is Windows 7.

That's right. Windows XP is unable to access GPT partitioned drives, so even if Rufus were to create GPT partitions there, you wouldn't be able to see their content at all.

The only way Rufus could support GPT on XP is if I were to compensate for what Microsoft decided not to do and develop a GPT driver so that you can access files. I'm afraid that's not going to happen...

There are a few good reasons Microsoft is retiring XP. Trying to access newer type of content is one of them.

HOWEVER, I should add that if you still want to create an UEFI bootable drive from XP, you just need to select "MBR partition for UEFI computer" (the second option) in the "Partition Scheme and target system type". This option is pretty much only there for XP users. And yes, if you use that option, you will be able to install Windows in full UEFI mode, and on a GPT partitioned HDD, even if your USB Drive is MBR. I also went the trouble of adding a tooltip that pretty much says just that:

So don't be afraid to try things out with Rufus if you find that one option is not available (of course Rufus will remove the GPT option when running on XP, since it can't apply there) - you might find that it does a bit more than what you think!

This seems to be a common issue with Windows 7 UEFI startup for some machines (does it look like the screenshots on that link?), that Microsoft fixed with Windows 8. I'm not sure anyone has discovered the reason for this Win7 specific freezout yet...

Hello. Are there any consequences if you don't disable Secure Boot before using the bootable USB drive to install Windows 8.1?
I was originally planning to use my USB drive without changing any settings in the BIOS.
(Sorry, I haven't read the posts in this thread, one of which probably answers my question.)

You don't need to turn secure boot off to install 8.1. I don't/haven't changed any of those settings on reinstalls of 8.1. You only need to turn secure boot off to install Windows 7 or Linux etc.
