UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows

Very confused? I've read though most of this thread and looked at the tutorial. Everything indicates that you cannot install in UEFI mode from a thumb drive formatted in NTFS. My ASUS K75DE has a UEFI BIOS. When I did my clean install I prepared my USB install thumb drive using the Windows 7 DVD Download Tool. I've always used this tool. Anyway it formats the thumb drive in NTFS, makes it bootable, and copies the ISO files to the thumb drive. I then booted from it, selected the UEFI option from the boot menu and installed Windows 8. I have a EFI partition on my hard drive and the "Boot To UEFI Firmware" option is there in Advanced options. My BIOS menu just looks like your standard BIOS though? So, is Windows really installed in UEFI or not?

    Hello Kerry,

If the USB flash drive is not formatted with FAT32 when using UEFI, then the system may not see the device as bootable.

One way to know for sure is to open Disk Management, and post a screenshot showing it's full layout. If it looks like below with an "EFI System Partition", then it's UEFI.

My disk management windows looks identical to yours other than the size on my Windows partition. 300MB Recovery and 100MB EFI. The thumb drive was bootable and formatted in NTFS.
In my BIOS the selected boot option is listed as "Windows Boot Manager PO: M4-........" Should it say UEFI in there somewhere? The install thumb drive shows up as "UEFI:KingstoneDatatraveler2 ".

EDIT: Fastboot is Enabled and Launch CSM is disabled.

You have UEFI then. I'm surprised it even saw the USB flash drive at boot with Fastboot enabled.

OK, I was starting to second guess myself after a debate in another thread. The BIOS fastboot option hasn't ever caused be any problems. The Windows 8 quick boot option is another story though. I am going to try the other option with a fat32 formatted thumb drive as per your tutorial when I clean install 8.1. I'll be waiting for the TechNet release before doing that though. Then I'll see if anything is different from my current install. Thanks for the quick reply.

Using option 2 in the tutorial, using diskpart, my laptop won't boot from the thumb drive. It shows up in the boot options list, but when I try to boot from it nothing happens and it just moves on to booting from Windows normally. Redid the thumb drive from scratch again and same deal. I'm going back to plan A and the Windows 7 DVD Download Tool. This is with the just released 8.1 from TechNet. If my laptop boots from it this time I may go back and have one more go at making a fat32 drive from the tutorial. Maybe I'll try Rufus.

    Hello Kerry,

I find that using the free program Rufus from Option One works best if you like.

I'll likely give that a try in a little while. It might this 8 gig flash drive that I'm using, its the first time I've used it for installs. I'm going to try a few things and post back when I'm done. My back pain is starting to flair up a bit so I might just put this off until tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.
