Ah, so I did understand it correctly. Also I bet Microsoft did that on purpose so they can show off with number of installs.

It's still a bit of a workaround, but I'm betting that it was to allow customers to be able to reinstall their Windows 8 upgrade as needed without having to install the previous OS first instead.

does this mean that the qualifying OS you run the upgrade assistant on remains tied to the upgrade ie. if you run the upgrade assistant from a XP (the same would apply to any OS)installation that you then cant use the same XP to dual boot or on a different system

It means that you agree not to use (activate) the qualifying OS's product key number as per the EULA for lower cost of an upgrade copy of Windows 8 instead of having to buy the more expensive full versions of Windows 8.

I downloaded W8 without a problem and then used it for about a week. I deleted it. I still had the same W7 loaded on the C: Now I would like to reload W8 but it will not accept my product key. It says that it cannot verify the key. How can I use the same product key for the same W8 on the same computer I bought it for?

    Hello Jim,

Double check to make sure that you have an internet connection, and that you are entering the correct product key. It's not hard to make a mistake with similar characters like o 0, G 6, etc...

    Hope this helps for now,

Thanks for clarifying everything Brink. I just purchased my Windows 8 Upgrade after playing with the RTM for a couple of days. The difference in performance compared to Windows 7 is so clear so its a no brainer to upgrade.

Will try this out after the download is finished. Cheers!

Just finished installing and found out my Windows 8 is already activated even if I did a clean install. It did ask me for my product key during installation.

Double check in "System" (step 3 or 5) to make sure though. It will always ask you to enter the product key during installation, but that doesn't mean that it will be activated afterwards.

Hi For the first time I have purchased an upgrade instead of the full version. It installed ok, but I am having one or two issues. For some reason, although in power options I have it set to 'shut down' on the power off, it shuts down then sometimes within a few minutes or in a few hours (during...

I'm interested in eventually trying Windows 8, I'm currently using Windows 7 on all my PC's. With 7 I was able to clean install with the upgrade disc I bought when I was in school for $40. Looks like Microsoft is offering upgrades to 8 for the same deal through Jan 31 2013. I was reading some...
