Thank you for this great tutorial Brink! I tried the BAT file method first, but Windows didn't activate, so I did a refresh and then it did. The only problem I had after the refresh was that Windows didn't show my DVD/RW in devices. After scratching my head for a few minutes, I tried switching the DVD/RW to another SATA port and then it appeared in devices once again. It isn't a bad SATA port because I hooked a drive up and it worked just fine.

You may have had the same problem that I had. The VMware CD reader definition was pointing to the Win8 virtual disk - in Settings. And when you changed the port, it was probably recognized as a new device and worked.

Does the file refresh to activate a clean install still work ?

Reason being I have 4 windows 8 pro product keys that were obtained through the upgrade assistant, however all 4 machines are having SSD's and windows 8 installed, I can't install windows 7 on the SSD's first as I have no windows 7 media as the machines came pre installed with windows 7 so if the file refresh option still works that will be perfect.

Forgot to add, the current hard drives with windows 7 installations on will be formatted and used as data drives along side the SSD's, the keys were purchased using the upgrade assistant from legit activated versions of windows 7.

I could mess about and use magic jelly bean to get the COA's off the windows 7 machines and download a windows 7 iso but tbh I would rather not have to do this if possible.

    Process Problem

Thanks for this nice instructions and many other useful info. Brink....

I am struggling to activate my windows 8 Pro. I followed all prerequisite steps and tried above 2 options but still not activated.

I also want to add that I am getting Product ID in System info. page. but windows is not activated. In "View Details" -- "Activation Details" error code is 0x80072EE7 - Server name or address could not be resolved.

Please note that I still not connected to the internet after win 8 installation and waiting for solution.

    Please help...

    Thanks in advance

    UPDATE....

I connected to internet and after few seconds I checked the System page and now windows is activated.

Once again, thank you so much Brink for sharing this great info.

    Windows 7 Ultimate

Hi. I just read through this after I started a win 8 pro install with an upgrade. I got a new pc with win 7 on it. I crashed my 7 and decided now is the time to do the 8 upgrade. I also decided to get a new SSD. So I installed 8 with the upgrade and it installed fine. However, when I went to activate, it would not work. I then found this site. But before I read through, I decided to try and install 8 again. When installing 8 again, I deleted all the partitions that were on the drive. Now installed, it is saying it is already activated. First, is it really activated? Second, is this because it saw windows 8 on the drive even though 8 was not activated before?
