I've upgraded my my 2x PCs to Win8 (previously Win7) and love the speed improvements. Problem is, one of my machine's (a Win7 machine) hard drive failed so I want to go striaght to the Win8 on blank HD. I still have the Win8 64-bit files downloaded onto a USB which loads so I just need to buy a new Win8 upgrade product key to get the installation to complete. How do I do this as I can't run the Win8 upgrade adviser to on my remaining machines to get to the bit where I purchase the key? Or am I missing something obvious?

    Thanks, LP.
PS And thanks for all the help you've provided others on this thread!
    Hello LP,

Do you have a friends computer that you could use? You could run the "Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant" and stop at step 14 below on any 32-bit or 64-bit Vista or Windows 7 computer to only purchase a product key. It will not invalidate their key.

    Hope this helps,

I'll give that a shot! Thanks. Worst comes to worse, I could always order a copy of the retail disks whilst the upgrade is cheap and have the disc and an extra key for the future. I'm bound to be asked to upgrade a Win7 PC at some stage by some family member who'd baulk at the upgrade pricing after end Jan. Could I use the retail key from a upgrade box set with the USB boot I already have? I guess a key's a key as long as it's a valid license. There's no optical drive on this PC so USB install preferred though I guess it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to swap an optical drive over - I've already opened the case anyway!

Sure you could use any Windows 8 installation media to install it with using your product key.

    Brink,

This might be a stupid question but here it goes. Can you input an upgrade key during the clean install using an upgrade media ? Cause back in Win7 days you would have to leave the product key area blank then add it in the second time ( upgrade )from within Windows .

Hello VK, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, you would enter the upgrade product key just as outlined in the tutorial.

Using that method to skip the key input would violate the EULA by bypassing the normal method of activation, and is not allowed to be discussed here since it could be used for illegal purposes.

Hello Harky, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Only if the key you are using for the Windows 8 is not also activated in any other installation.

If it is, then no. One separate key per activation per installation.

    If not, then yes.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Hello Harky,

Nope. You have to have a separate Media Center Pack product key per Windows 8 Pro installation. You will only get one key per email address.
