Windows XP (migrating to Windows 8)

    Hi,
I have a system with 32bit version of XP and purchased a Windows 8 Pro upgrade license.
After realizing that I could not download the 64 bit version of the upgrade I contacted Microsoft that recommended to run the Upgrade Assistant from a 64 bit system, create an ISO image and use it for a FRESH install.
I did that all and realized, only after reinstalling the full system (including several apps) that my serial code was not set.

Then i found your tutorial and tried to run it from point 6 (activate windows 8 upgrade using a BAT File).

After running the BAT file, I tried to reboot the system (actually the action proposed by my system is "upgrade and reboot").
The system restarts and tries to upgrade but the process fails and rolls back.

So in the end I've not been able to get the system activated.

My question is: is there a way to activate the system without having to re-install all the third party applications?

    Thanks,
    Attilio

Hello Attilio, and welcome to Eight Forums.

"Upgrade and Reboot" indicates that Windows was going to install Windows Updates first, then reboot.

You might try the BAT again since an update may have interfered with it.

If that doesn't help, then try changing the product key number to your number again to see if it may toggle it activated.

However, most likely you may need to refresh.

I have a question, I'm planning to upgrade to an SSD sometime next year. If I do the clean install with the Windows 8 Pro upgrade now on my current boot drive (a 320gb wd drive.), will I be able to repeat the install on the new drive or do I need to get a new copy of Windows 8?

Hello HarvickFan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, as long as you format the current 320 GB drive right before or after installing to the new drive.

Just to be clear, you're saying I can do this more then once as long as I reformat the drive with the installed Windows 8 first?

Yes, the product key for the upgrade is a retail key, so you can install and activate as many times as you like so long as it's only activated on one PC at the same time.

Having been pointed to this thread by znod (thanks) I have done a fresh install of Win 8 via usb stick and on reboot I looked in the SYSTEM page to find that the system was shown as activated. The system page still shows this now after applying Windows updates. So far I have not needed to refresh the system or use the downloaded .bat file.

    Hello Duckface,

    Great news.

Did you have an OEM computer that came with Windows 8 preinstalled?

I am building a new system and am wondering if this will work for it, and also if I do this will I still be genuine as well as able to apply updates? Which is recommended step 5 or 6.
