Yup, I'm in the correct forum, because I'm running Windows 8.1 and loving it.

But, keeping with my hobby of experimenting with other (new) OS's, today I downloaded a copy of "Zorin" .
I have it installed and running on a little 1TB laptop drive.

So my question is: Has anyone else tried "Zorin"? If so, what do you think of it?

I purchased Zorin OS 9 Ultimate 64 bit years ago; 2014, €9.99 EUR. I liked it a lot. My intention was to ditch windows. But, I instead stuck with windows8.1 64bit. I liked that ZorinOS, just was to lazy to completely ditch what I 'knew'. Plenty of positive review videos praising ZorinOS over at 00t00b.

The version I got was called "Zorin OS 16 Pro". It's a far departure from Windows 8.1, which I'm running. But it did come with Firefox and a few other programs that actually make it usable.
I ran it for a day, before reverting back to Windows 8.1. I have the two OS's on separate HD's, so "Never the trains shall meet".
So when I'm bored, and have nothing better to do, I can always plug in the Zorin drive and play with that some more.

Heh, that is how I 'use' windows10. On its own sata ssd, I'll boot to Windows10 to allow it to update. I rummage around with it for a bit for maybe an hour, then boot back to good-ole win8.1.
I tell myself one day I'll re-install zorin for a 'tri-boot'. Just liking win8.1 alot in combo with classic shell. At the moment I have zorin in vmplayer.

I haven't tried Zorin but I'm sure up front it looks good like many Linux distros. What I have disliked about Linux and it appears (to me) not much has changed, is Linux still has little full featured support for much of the hardware out there, kinda like the default Windows drivers leave much to be desired.

I was really wanting to jump over to Mint or something similiar but beyond the OS itself (which I like, and enjoy noodling with), it felt like something was missing, it was there are few (good, IMO) Linux alternatives for the many and varied little apps I enjoy. I drudged through the Alternative-To site but rarely found anything.

Unless companies start providing Linux & Windows drivers as the norm I don't see Linux becoming dominant for the desktop, and will stay relegated to a more behind the scenes role... and MS will continue to take a bit more of our freedom with each OS release.

I heard of what I guess was/is LinuxFX or WindowsFX and as expected it really isn't a replacement for Windows either. I hate Wine, just seems clunky and unreliable, which is the way this release claims you can run Windows .exe and .msi files - with little success, atleast the videos I watched as the creator of the video attempted to install very basic windows apps - with various errors - ultimately a failed install, and some success.

I would abandon Windows for Linux in a heartbeat if I knew I could build any system I wanted, and my hardware would function fully without limitation, I'm not confident I could. I would also have to find alternatives to some of my apps, with some of the Linux tools being terminal apps, OK but kinda ugly IMO.

I'm not going to give up just yet on Linux - fingers crossed.

My sentiments precisely. In fact I'm replying to this post on a Linux o/s even as I type. I have other programs that I know I can't use on Linux and it gets annoying some times but I'm finding more and more that I'm going back to Linux when I don't need to use Windoze software. Some of my hardware actually runs better on Linux and I feel obliged to say that Linux has come a long way. I refuse to run Windows 10 on my work station. It's either Win 7, 8.1, or Linux. A triple boot can come in mighty handy at times. Isn't that what work stations are for?

My NEEDS far exceed my curiosity. I need to run Windows, I need to stay up to date on Windows. Not Linux or any of its look-a-likes.
Because I run many programs that will run ONLY on Windows, and my several hundred customers also ONLY run Windows. So there is really NO place in my life for anything else.

That's not to say, that as a computer hobbiest, I've not installed and looked at many versions of Linux, Zorin being the latest and the most friendly for me to use. I have.
But I still can't find anyplace in my daily life for anything but some version of Windows. Currently running Windows 8.1.

Cheers Mates,

The reason I use Linux is because my needs exceed what Windows can offer. Alas, my needs also exceed what Linux can offer. Solution: Use both. Because I'm also a hobbyist and because I also need to stay abreast of what's coming down the line I also use Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Linux. I still use Windows 7 Ultimate which, in my opinion, is the last real operating system Microsoft ever developed. Admittedly, I've never used Zorin and probably never will. I did play around with Qubes for a while but got bored of it because I couldn't get online with it. Nice concept though. I'm currently typing this on Windows 8.1. Yup. I get around ;)
