How to Fix "You've been signed in with a temporary profile" Error in Windows 8 and 8.1


This is for when after you sign in to a user account in Windows 8, and notice that a temporary profile has been loaded instead of the profile that corresponds to the current user. Therefore, any changes that you make to the current desktop are lost after you sign out. Additionally, the notification area may display the following error message:

You've been signed in with a temporary profile.

You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later. Please see the event log for more details or contact your system administrator.

This problem usually occurs if the user profile of the account was accidentally corrupted or deleted from the system.


This tutorial will show you how to fix the "You've been signed in with a temporary profile" error a user may get after signing in to their account in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

This will basically delete the user profile of the user account that is getting the "You've been signed in with a temporary profile" error in order to reset and rebuild the user profile to fix this error.

A user profile is a collection of settings that make the computer look and work the way you want it to for a user account. It contains the account's settings for desktop backgrounds, screen savers, pointer preferences, sound settings, and other features. User profiles ensure that your personal preferences are used whenever you sign in to Windows.


How to read event log details for User Profile Service error:

  • Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc), then expand open Windows Logs and Application in the left pane.
  • Right click or press and hold on Application in left pane, click on Find, type 1511 (for Event ID), and click/tap on Find Next.
  • Close the Find dialog, and view details. Repeat to view any other listed 1511 Event IDs if needed.

EXAMPLE: "You've been signed in with a temporary profile" Notification Message

Here's How:

1. If you have another administrator account that is not affected by this user profile error, then sign out of the affected account (ex: Brink), and sign in to the other administrator account.

Note   Note
If you do not have another administrator account to sign in to, then you could do one of the following options below to enable the built-in Administrator account to sign in to, and continue on to step 2 below.

A) If the affected account is an administrator, then enable the built-in Administrator account, sign out, and sign in to Administrator.

OR

B) Boot into safe mode, enable the built-in Administrator, sign out, and sign in to Administrator.


2. Press the :winkey: + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and click/tap on OK.

3. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.

4. In Registry Editor, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

5. In the left pane under ProfileList, click on a SID key (S-1-5-21....long number). (see screenshot above)
NOTE: Usually, it will be for the SID key that has .bak at the end of the long number.

A) In the right pane of the SID key, look at the ProfileImagePath value to see if it is for the same user account name (ex: Brink) that has the user profile error.

B) If not, then repeat step 6 until your find it, then go to step 7 below.

6. Right click or press and hold on the SID key (ex: ...-1006.bak) found in step 6, and click/tap on Delete. (see screenshot below step 5)

7. Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)

8. If there is another SID key (ex: ...-1006 at end) with the exact same long number from step 6 for the same user account (ex: Brink) without .bak at the end of it, then repeat step 7 and 8 above for it as well.

9. When finished, close Registry Editor.

10. See if you are now able to sign in to the user account (ex: Brink) from step 1 without getting the "You've been signed in with a temporary profile" error.

Dear Shawn,

Thank you so much for a very clear step-by-step explanation to fix the temporary profile problem. Now I can get back to my profile but I lost all preferences and settings, such as wall paper, firefox bookmarks etc. I have copied the old profile to temporary folders before deleting it. Is there any way I can recover the old settings? Should I just copy back the temporary files back to my user profile directory (i.e. C:\Users\(user-name) folder)?

If you are using a Microsoft account, your personal settings should eventually sync back.

If you are using a local account, then it would be best to just set them back to how you wanted. Copying the files from the backup would most likely also reintroduce the issue you were originally having.

I need help with this. I've followed the tutorial to the letter and the profile was not recreated and now I only have the admin account which I cant access because I seem to have deactivated the built-in admin... Anything I might have missed or can anything be done at this point? Since I cannot even get passed the account selection.. Any help is apreciated. I have posted a pic with the message it now displays.

For me, All I had to do was do a complete shut down of my laptop (hold the power button in) then boot it again. I'm not sure if it would work for other people though.

You might see if you may be able to enable your built-in Administrator account at boot using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below.

If not, then you could try doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully fix this.

If that doesn't work, he could use the sticky keys hack by booting into a Windows 8.1 install DVD , doing shift+F10 to bring up the command prompt, (following the steps here) and then after, booting into the OS, pressing shift 5x at the logon screen to bring up the command prompt, then type the command:
net user administrator /active:yes then net user administrator password to give the administrator account a password of "password".

I really got messed up, signed in temporary profile, i understood the way to repair it from your steps, but i'm confuse
does doing your steps will make all of my applications, data, and all my stuff back to their places by themselves after doing your steps? I got videos editing program and the are gone from my desktop, could it be possible they return immediately after doing you way??

The tutorial basically has you to delete the corrupted profile for your account, and has it recreated afterwards.

If you are able to successfully sign in to your afterwards, then yes everything will be as it was.

SOMEONE please help me this happened to me 2 days ago all my desktop files dissapeared, in the Local Disk C: all folders and files were there but when i checked desktop nothing so i did this method i backed up the entire user continue with the process and the problem was gone BUT my desktop files wasnt there. So by the time ''You have been singed to a temporary profile'' hit me i lost everything from desktop i had many folders and stuff there. Is there anyway i can have my files back?

This is an example of a folder that i search that was in my desktop. They appear as shortcuts. Every other file that was not at desktop is there. Also every app that was at Local Disk C: is like new theres no data or anything saved.Any help is appreciated

thanks for replaying yes i did everything but i am not sure about If there was another SID key with the same name without .bak because i delete it without looking the numbers so i may have not delete the .bak(less) folder. I found this.. Screenshot_1dwefw.pngi didnt delete the old user folder and when i press to see what storage it takes it says 11 gb which i think is with all my old files but when i go into this files and check all of it again Screenshot_1dewfw.png it says 1 gb ...i dont have a clue..

I'm so glad this thread is here, saved my neighbors life today. Basically we just have to remember we're creating a new user, moving every file from the affected account over, sans the NTUSER.dat's, then deleting the foodle out of the ProfileList entry with ".bak" added (plus the original).

This is the 3rd time I've had to do it, the thing to watch out for is that sometimes the error that causes thus dupes the target account into an "administrator.(original user name)-PC" account, which is why the profile service can't locate the files, they get moved into that account.

I had moved the files from the original account folder, and nothing happened, then I noticed the renamed dupe account folder, after copying from there it worked perfect. So always look for a dupe of your account folder.

I seem to have a similar issue.

Had the Temp Profile message this morning. Did the suggested steps but it's still not working... All my folders/files and apps are gone. If I do a search for a folder, it will find it under ThisPC>OS(C:>Users>username. The problem is that the profile loaded seems to be ThisPC>OS(C:>Users>username.username and this has none of my files on it... Also, I can't find my Firefox bookmarks. What should I do to re-access my old profile?

Tried to run win updates several times and restart but it's not working...

HELP!

Sorry about the late reply.

Usually when you are unable to repair your user profile, you'll need to create a new one to use instead. If the new one gives you the same error as well, then you'll usually need to reinstall Windows. :(

You would basically be creating a new user account to use instead of your current corrupted one, and make it an administrator account. Once created, you would copy over any personal files you want to keep from the old account's profile folders to the new account. If everything checks out ok with the new account, you can delete the old if you like.
