Consumers downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview over a million times in less than 24 hours, but we're willing to bet that the majority of those downloads came from the technically inclined rather than, say, your parents. The tech world has already proclaimed what it likes and doesn't like in Windows 8 -- but do everyday people really care if W8 has an enhanced contact app? Can everyday people even locate the contact app in W8? Lockergnome's Chris Pirillo decided to put the W8 interface to the test by plopping his elderly father down in front of the new OS with no introduction.

MS are looking at putting some kind of shorcut on the main ui ( the desktop) - some basic instructions so you don't get stuck there.

They might have it pop up automatically as a little interactive tutorial.


It is quite astonishing they didn't think about it bfore.

That is definitely going to be needed, hopefully it's well done.

A couple of short videos, then pop up balloons pointing the way, and of coarse a easy way to disable it.

I don't know why they didn't include video tutorials in Vista and W7.

Probably to keep the .wim install file and the subsequent footprint it installs in check.

Although they could present to a user logging on for the first time with a little box to check to not show it again, a brief explanation that there are videos available and a link to them. Of course, powered by Silverlight.

They wouldn't necessarily have had to install them.
They could have been on the install DVD (or a 2nd DVD).

Obviously that would have been more problematic for laptop users.

I don't know exactly what they will end up with.

Possibly a little tut that pops up the first time you get to the main ui (desktop).

They might have that pop up as once only.

I am not sure once only is a good idea.

It is probably better to keep it there - so people can refer to it again if needed.

More like a type of getting started wizard screen you tend to see with many programs. The rest they will probably leave for their own support people to keep them busy answering everyone's questions. Got to have something for them to do all day!

According to his son, the man in the video is only familiar with Mac. From that point he did not try to bring the mouse cursor to the left down corner. Instead he kept on clicking the right corner.

Actually, if you watch the follow-up video, which I posted here, he quite clearly states he uses XP and Windows 7 on his laptop.

Seemed that his son was testing him to get the purest first impression of Win 8? It is interesting that he said he is probably not the only one who doesn't like Win 8.

The one thing you'll notice right away about W8 over the way MS handled beta releases for the previous versions is that there is no requirement to sign up first to become a beta tester. They wanted the CP out there this time around so everybody would be able to see(or exposed to) the major gui changes being seen.

The most likely rational for this would be the high market for portable devices and being in the spotlight there following the success that 7 has seen. Topping 7 will be the hard sell especially with... what's this?

Going back a decade the upgrade from the 95-98SE days into XP with XP Themes was a large change but not as drastic however. No more shutdown to dos mode since there was no more dos.(DosBOX to be seen later as a 3rd party app)

But even when stepping over a few versions when upgrading the "dad" portrayed there DID NOT know what to do next! He was obviously dumbfounded as most may find themselves unless MS includes an introduction welcome type wizard screen as well as options for providing the more Classic appearance to some extent.

Try the system notification area. Anything showing in the system along with IE and Windows Explorer were the only things visible as far as you could see. Without knowing about a hidden Start screen and right click menu in the left corner as would be all too many users he ended up in bewilderment!

I have the strongest feeling however that if there is to be a CP2 equivalent to RC release you see more of the desktop part of 8 come to life while the DP and CP alike are mainly for introducing the Metro UI. A CP2 would most likely see the Metro disable option or choice during installation of a more classic type desktop with or without any Start button.

Or you could be looking at the Tablet version to some extent of one of the new version's editions until a CP2 arrives later?

I never said they would be scraping it just seeing an option to load up to the desktop directly Rather then the default the Start screen and then click a button to reach the desktop. A CP2 would be equal to a 7 RC in that sense being equal to a Release Candidate if they release another build prior to retail.

I think that will weighing the most on the minds of many. When talking with a friend about the CP and the new look he stated "no thanks! I would likely put my fist through the screen!" meaning he would get too frustrated with the changes 8 is bringing forward.

Like I had mentioned before by the time 8 reaches retail you will have heard all kinds of "Mixed Opinions" about the new version. I certainly won't be replacing 7 here with 8 but still want to get familiar with it.

Today I go with a friend of my Wife to purchase a Macbook Pro, she as a HP with Windows 7 before, it take her only half an hour to get use with the OSX, no short key to memorize, no hide stuff too. She buy a Mac because she already as a iPhone and a iPad and like it, I ask her if she will like to have her Mac with the same type of Icon as the iPad, she said of course not I want something different for my PC…. So why Microsoft insist to give us a Phone OS for out PC ?

I think peoples at Microsoft live in a cloud, the fall back on Earth will be very hard....

Well that about sums that up! Some are going to love 8 while many are going to be clinging onto 7!

This is one version where the change is too large for comfort for many and simply too awkward for others. When going to describe some of the changes to a friend when discussing the CP he came back with most likely would end up putting a fist through the screen in frustration!

Once he heard about the GUI changes he didn't take to it! I told him the next time he stopped by I could take him through a tour of the next to be version of Windows. If 8 becomes all Metro only in the final retail many will simply opt for alternatives and 8 will end up flopping. It's not just new ideas being implemented but wanting to change how people do things at the desktop level which will be the downside.

I kind of like the challenge, something new, however my wife absolutely hates it, so much that Ive had to go back to windows 7, so much that we may have to make our next computer a mac....I don't understand what the big deal is....

By "scrap" I meant MS giving people the option to avoid. Who would buy 8 if they're never forced to use Metro? Is the ribbon and a few seconds shaved off boot time worth $200? Yes, I know there's more to it than that, and outside of Metro I can't think of a single negative about 8. It definitely improves on 7 but I don't know if I'd buy it unless the changes vs. 7 are more significant, and I'm a geek for this sort of thing.
