Your general opinions on Windows 8.1 Preview Release

After some hours playing with the Preview I'm back to may production environment. Tomorrow I'll start to test lots of programs and games to make a compatibility list for Preview. I installed the Preview in a 200GB physical partition especially to accommodate everything I want to test.

Today I need to sleep. Since yesterday afternoon I'm stuck in front of the computer because of that release. My wife says that I'm addicted, and I guess she's right.

I downloaded the installer & sat for 3 hours watching please wait & tiny balls rotating.

I booted into safe mode/recovery with BootUI Tuner {It's worth it's weight in gold}.

Did a system restore & am happy now.

8.1 will not be installed on my computer.

Maybe Windows 15.1................

Well, it's installed and I've got all my usual apps on it. Pretty uneventful so far. My only gripe at this point is not being able to create a non microsoft account for first log in. It's getting close to quitting time, so I'll probably put it through its paces tomorrow.

The Start Button is an absolute joke. The ONLY thing it provides that was not already available in the lower left corner is a more convenient way to shutdown/reboot. All the other right-click features are available in Win 8.0. And, as stated by others, the dumb thing gets in the way of the Classic Shell Start Button. A Cnet video talked about all the wonderful features available by right clicking the Start button. Are they really that dumb?

I do like the small tiles for the start screen. They would be useful if I ever actually wanted to use the start screen :)

While waiting for the ISO to be available (which, by the way, we should not have had to do - 20 marks deducted, MS) I've been reading up on the experiences of others, and what they've found with/within 8.1.

Seriously, there's nothing there to inspire me to waste a quarter of my monthly allowance to download this POS. It is an insult to 'real' users, and a sop to kids with toys and the computer-illiterate. It brings nothing whatsoever to the table for me, apart from small tiles, which they've apparently nobbled so they only work on Metro rubbish, not real programs.

I'll be sticking with Win 8, now that I have 'fixed' all Microsoft's mistakes (and yes, they were mistakes). Mistakes which, rather than being addressed and rectified, appear to have been compounded and expanded. I am not prepared to go through 8.1 fixing all those mistakes once again, plus more. No way, Jose!! And there's absolutely nothing to interest 'real' users whatsoever.

MS may have 'listened to our concerns', but they sure didn't act upon them, IMO. Quite the opposite. So it looks increasingly like Windows 8 will be my last MS operating system. I love Win 8, but have no interest in
8.1, whatsoever.

Mint Cinnamon is looking better by the day. And that 'Deepin' is looking interesting. Shame 8.1 isn't.

Wenda.

One issue I have found that possibly is me, not Win 8.1 is I have lost the ability to pin a web site to Start. I used to be able to load a site on the desktop, go to the little "gear" in the upper right corner and find the choice " Add site to Start Screen". Now, in WIn 8.1, the choice is "Add site to Apps". Well, I can do that and sure enough it is added to the Apps List and I can even click on it to load it into the Desktop. But, no tile appears on the Start Screen. What am I missing?

Thanks, SR

It seems that search (win+q) is horribly broken. It's slow, and finds less than win7 search. I like the other changes, but I abuse search too much for this to work for me. I'd also rather be able to hide the start button.

interesting ,I have been using win8 since last august and never have I clicked on the little gear, likely you are not missing anything ,I think they just decided you wanted them in Apps
you can go to apps after pinning it there and then pin it to desktop taskbar .lol

Is it happening only to me or anyone also noticed that desktop icons can't be moved ?

~edit~

Sfc/scannow and a restart solved that !

:)

Yes, true, but I am trying to pin to Start Screen as a Tile. I can't pin it from Apps because it indicates that it is already Pinned, even though it is not visible. I just don't know what to do about that. Any ideas?

Obly Tile might work with 8.1.

OblyTile - Download

Or not.

True, I will try that. I hadn't gotten that far yet since the previous methods worked on Win 8.0. Perhaps just a bug that has not yet been worked out. After all, this is preliminary, right?

Thanks for the suggestion.
