Ok, a few of us have had this thing for a few hours and have been able to kick the tires around. So, whaddya think?

Obvious Talked about changes
  • Start button
  • Boot to desktop
  • Can resize Metro apps to whatever size you want, can run more than 2
  • Lockscreen screenshow
  • Ability to use Windows background as your start screen background
  • Libraries are not show by default, you can right click in Explorer and turn them back on.
  • You can search for apps in the Store and sort for things like Top Free, Top Paid, etc.
  • Search overhauled
  • Can sort All Apps by a variety of criteria.

Smaller Things I have found
  • Right click power users menu includes SHUT DOWN.
  • Charms bar is displayed closer to whichever corner you clicked on

Overall, I don't see this as a dramatic, "blow up my skirt", "holy crap I gotta have this now" update. For people who already have 8 and are a bit bummed out because of some customization options which are lacking, this will be more palatable. For the rest of the general population, I don't see this as solving the problem.

I noticed that in Windows 8.1 Preview the "Computer" window is now called "This PC", and has your user folders included on it now. The navigation pane options have changed a bit as well.

I liked it. It's much better to have the drives and user folders in a single window.

Windows 8.1 Preview Updates are already coming

Libraries can also be enabled in "Folder Options"

Same here. "This PC" makes more sense these days when your dealing with homegroups, networks, Cloud, etc.... now.

I'm still disappointed that file history is still not customizable in terms of which folders you want included in the backup. Let's say I have D:\data and I want that to be backed up, I cannot include extra folders outside of my libraries.

You can save them to "Images" library (and set as desktop) and/or apply to "Lock Screen".

:)

First create a system image

I'mglad I created a system image before I installed 8.1. Maybe it was just on mysystem but I noticed that it booted up much slower, ran slower and shutdownslower. I then attempted to do something and the whole system just froze. So Iplugged in my external drive that had the image on it, put in my repair disk, shutdown my system and restored theimage. So I would suggest that you make an image before doing anything else.Even if you don't have any problem with 8.1, and you may not, I think it'sstill a good idea to create an image occasionally

I am really liking Windows 8.1, the only thing I cannot figure out is how to get it to boot to desktop, any help?

The damn fake start button gets in the way of classic shell orb. You can fire up classic shell start menu with the super key still.

Have you noticed that the window visualization preview has a bug? When I put the mouse over an open program in the taskbar the preview image is screwed.

Were you able to install Classic Shell? I got a compatibility warning when I tried to install it. Also Start8 installs but does nothing.

:(

Classic shell 3.6.7 installs fine for me. The fake start button is a nuisance.

Also seems to be a problem with ie and this site.

Thanks a lot !

Yeah ! I ignored the warnings and it's now working. To say the truth it's better than it was in Windows 8 because now I have the "Fake Start Button" taking me to the "Start Screen" and the "Classic Start Menu" when I press CTRL+ESC.

Can't get the ISO yet, but so far everything I've seen is encouraging me to remain on W8.

I'll probably be lambasted for saying this, but there appears to be nothing in 8.1 for me at all. But there's
a lot that I either actively dislike, or won't use. There appears to be precisely nothing to interest 'traditional'
(ie, desktop) users.

Much more-so than W8.

Wenda.
