Solved you cant install windows on a usb flash drive with setup

Hi all

I am trying to upgrade from windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 on a samsung laptop.
The download completes and installation starts.
After a while the following message appears "you cant install windows on a usb flash drive with setup"
I am not actually trying to install to a flash drive.
I contacted Microsoft and after 5 hours they said that I should connect to the internet with a cable and not by wireless in order to solve the problem (this didn't work of course and I had told them that it was an install problem and not a download problem).
Anyway all help would be appreciated. getting tired of downloading for 1 hour every time only for everything to fail.

Always expect all sorts of crap when you upgrade Windows.
Clean install from scratch(boot from 8.1 DVD or usb, format c: and install).
But just in case, have a backup plan ready before you start, that is a Windows 8 DVD and a valid product key in case something got messed up when installing 8.1. You never know.
Oh and by the way backup your files first because you'll start new born.

Hi All

After a number of failed attempts I tried this solution that I found on another forum.



change the value of PortableOperatingSystem in regedit HK_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/ from 1 to 0

This worked for me and the installation worked first time.
Hope this helps someone else.
