Solved WTF is going on with Win 8 LAN speeds?

I have a Windows 8 laptop that sits by my TV that I use solely as a video and audio server. I leave it running all the time, logged in to my home network. It never goes into full sleep mode, because long after the display goes off, I can still upload files to it.

Right after a reboot, I can upload to it at about 1.0 or 1.25 megs/sec, and it will hold that speed for a day or two (should I upload another file). I have noticed, however, that after a day or so, when I try to upload a new file to it, the speed has dropped, often to as low as 100 of 200 kbs. There's no maneuver I know of to increase the speed other than rebooting, after which the speed immediately jumps back up to a meg a sec.

This is not a router problem. I can upload to an XP desktop wired to the router at 2 mbs all day every day. There is nothing else happening on that network when these speeds slow. The laptop in question is never used on the internet.

When is Microsoft going to get their act together? Never?

Nope, in Windows 10 it is even worse and be glad, that you do use WiFi, that is a disaster. MS is insane.
Try to disable automatic and network related settings, like adapter's energy saving and other nonsense.

@ Tairiku, On Surface Pro 3 Tablet you don't even have an option for WiFi power settings. At least the one and only balanced power plan work fantastically, giving all of my 300 Mbps internet through WiFi.

OP, BTW 1 MB/s sounds like you're on the 10 Mbps LAN connection. Verify that you're at least on a 100 Mbps connection on your connection properties and if lower than that, upgrade your switch/router and use Cat5e or higher class Ethernet cable.

Good idea on the energy saving settings. I'll check the video server's adapter settings.

The other part - I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Be glad I use wifi, that is a disaster???? You mean that's a disaster in Win 10?

Sorry, I forgot NOT, be glad, that you do not use WiFi. Support forums are flooded with people having problems with WiFi since Windows 8 and in Windows 10 it has got even more complicated.

1.0 or 1.25 megs a second is not good. Did you mean megabytes per second? On my wired network at work I get nearly 95MB/sec transferring files do and from my laptop. At home, I get around 85MB/sec.

Sure enough, among the fifty adapter settings on the video server there was one for "enable minimal power" or something like that. I disabled that and there has been no degradation of speed since I rebooted last night. Might have done the trick, thanks. Will let you know.

On the router: it's an old 54mbs netgear unit WGR614v7. Firmware is upgraded. I could find no router settings regarding speed of the connection. I noticed that MTU size was 1500 bytes. The HP laptop, in the control panel under networks, the speed of the connection is shown at 54mb/sec. (Seems I read a month or two ago in another forum that a lot of people are having trouble breaking that 1mb/sec LAN speed barrier.) Nevertheless, could this old router be the cause of the slow transfer speed (1mb/sec)?

I've been thinking about getting this $20, 4.5 star unit (5,000 votes) from Amazon. 300mb/sec. Any thoughts? Heard on a local sports forum that it was pretty good.

Amazon.com: TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, 300Mpbs, IP QoS, WPS Button: Electronics

Here's an extra question: Under router settings, should I broadcast the SSID?

The transfer speed from one LAN computer to the LAN video server is now firmly at 1 mbps. Disabling the energy saving feature seems to have solved that problem. I've been wanting a new router for a while and so I ordered the one above. Doubt if it will speed up that figure, but for $20, it's worth a try.
