Working Antivirus for Win8

IMO, allowing autorun.inf to run automatically is an open invitation to infection. This excerpt from KB967715 shows how to stop autorun:

To disable Autorun yourself on operating systems that do not include Gpedit.msc, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following entry in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutorun
Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the "How to selectively disable specific Autorun features" section.
Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.
How to selectively disable specific Autorun features
To selectively disable specific Autorun features, you must change the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry in one of the following registry key subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\

The following table shows the settings for the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry. Value Meaning
0x1 or 0x80 Disables AutoRun on drives of unknown type
0x4 Disables AutoRun on removable drives
0x8 Disables AutoRun on fixed drives
0x10 Disables AutoRun on network drives
0x20 Disables AutoRun on CD-ROM drives
0x40 Disables AutoRun on RAM disks
0xFF Disables AutoRun on all kinds of drives

Cheers

Hmmm. The above is for Win7, doesn't seem to exist in Win8.

With Win8 8102, it's best you leave it to Defender for the time being (it's identical to MSE and is updated regularly):

After performing a wipe & reload yesterday afternoon, I tried MS Security Essentials (just for S&G). It installed and works well also.

Yeah... After finding out that Avira just showed anomaly in its updating routine. I just have the MSE updated and filled a list of files need to be excluded from being scanned and taged as viruses as I have some files that occasionally detected as false positive.

Well.. it might be a bit safe to create a restore point if we suspect the program is probably incompatible with win 8. so that we can have it rolled back ;)

So... the deal is: MSE is the only 'fully' antivirus currently working 100% with Win8?

I had same issues with Avira... the only one I use, don't like any other...

I just uninstalled it, since it looks it doesn't update.

Hi all
I'm always puzzled when people say AV product xxxx is working perfectly.
It might INSTALL OK but the only way to test that it actually DOES work is to chuck a virus at it and see what happens.

Now I'm sure there's almost NO-ONE on these forums who deliberately want to infect their computer -- even if only doing it on a Virtual Machine which can be deleted after the test so most if not all of the information in this thread is either mis-leading or worse - false.

The actual title should be AV software that INSTALLS correctly on W8 rather than WORKS correctly --- big big difference.

Incidentally I think the whole idea of third party AV software is really passed its sell by date -- more and more security is being built into the Windows kernel itself so IMO the best people who can deal with this would be the writers of the OS itself -- i.e Microsoft.

MSE appears to function fine (I say APPEARS to as I've never yet had a Virus so I can't say if it WORKS 100% correctly) and by all accounts with people on the W7 Forums it seems to detect most of the currently "favourite" viruses going the rounds.

I'm not anti 3rd party apps such as decent Backup software or imaging programs like Photoshop but when Software needs to get right into the Windows Kernel itself I think I'd prefer to leave it to Microsoft and stick with MSE. As I said apart from contracts for supplying security to 100's of Corporate laptops on company LANS the day of these smaller companies providing AV software for home computers IMO is over.

Cheers
jimbo

It's hard to accurately put a price tag on a AV program as viruses can come in all shapes and forms, how destructive they are once they get in and how they can be prevented from spreading (aka deleted/removed). There can be no single AV program that can be used to govern every aspects of virus protection more than another. Virus definitions and the frequency of obtain these updates is all important and will be the determining factor as to whether a pc is adequately protected or not.

@jimbo45: I have a few "favorite" places to go when I want to prove an antivirus program is watching out for me. Bearing in mind that no antivirus is 100% effective against all miscreant code; I simply navigate to these places and play around... it doesn't take long and the bells are going off. No, I don't deliberately "chuck" a virus at my machine as I don't have that ability. But... going to known compromised websites or downloading and running a program crack loaded with a trojan is a pretty safe bet you are playing with fire. Testing this way I have nothing to lose as it is a TEST machine. If I thoroughly hose it by doing the above, then no harm done - wipe and reload. So far, I have 'tested' two A/V products this way and both told me they detected and blocked bad code. BTW, just for the record: what has REALLY passed it's "Sell By" date is the term VIRUS. There are actually very few true viruses floating around out there now or being newly written and released. Our nemesis is really MALWARE... the code that attempts to trick us into giving out our credit card numbers, or maybe just lurk on our systems waiting for us to type it in when making a purchase. But most of all we need to be diligent and ever-watchful as the BIGGEST threat of all is.... OURSELVES.
