The Windows Defender installed by default with Win 8 is actually MSE renamed. You do not need to install MSE anymore

Defender and MSE use the same process (MsMpEng.exe). When you install MSE (which you still have to do yourself), Defender is being replaced by MSE.

But Defender covers pretty much everything MSE covers in terms of malware.

I don't know that. I have not analysed the code. But I suppose when they developed MSE, they based it on the defender code.

There seems to be some confusion on whether Defender 6.2 does the same job as MSE 2. I think this is due to the fact Defender leaves no icon in the notification tray.

Deluge 1.3.3 - It works and downloads just fine. But it wouldn't let me use magnet links or download the torrent file from URL. You have to download the torrent via a web browser and then go to Deluge, and open it from inside Deluge.

Daemon tools is now REDUNDANT since W8 mounts virtual drives -- just right mouse click the iso file and choose MOUNT.

VMWARE Workstation rel 8 works on the 32 bit version of W8 but not the 64 bit version (currently although am re-installing again).

Update on vmware rel 8 and vmware player R4 on W8 x-64. (Note these work perfectly on W8 x-86).

Apply the fix I've posted in the virtualisation section on this Forum -- then you can add these to the list of working programs.

Hi there
Nero 7 Premium re-loaded (the last decent non too bloated version) works fine provided you download install DirectX first from the MS site BEFORE you start the install process.

If you let the installer try and install Directx as part of the install process it will fail.


Add the Mega Pack plugins so you can burn Audio CD's from FLAC files.

The new Nero 11 Lite Free edition (good for basic CD / DVD burning / copying which is 99% of what most people want to do) won't work as it doesn't recognize W8 as an operating system -- It's looking for W7 / Vista / XP only.

BTW not sure why people need Daemon Tools any more -- W8 will mount an ISO itself now -- just right mouse click on the iso file and the context menu will show MOUNT. This will mount the ISO for you. Eject when you've finished.

Yeah, it appears none of the 2012 Autodesk products work on Win8 8102.

The 2011 flavors work, though.

Installs, shows the different .wba options but clicking them does not change the GUI.

Also, clicking some themes completely trashes the display, leaving only a black background and mouse cursor.

aem, it seems there isn't any real consistency as some programs work well for some users but fail for others.

I dunno if it can be done much differently, at this point, as MS hasn't presented any "official" list so, in the interim, with this Dev Preview (and the leaks prior), and until the Beta (maybe not even then) ... well, this is all we've got.
