I don't know that. I have not analysed the code. But I suppose when they developed MSE, they based it on the defender code.Defender and MSE use the same process (MsMpEng.exe). When you install MSE (which you still have to do yourself), Defender is being replaced by MSE.The Windows Defender installed by default with Win 8 is actually MSE renamed. You do not need to install MSE anymore
But Defender covers pretty much everything MSE covers in terms of malware.
