Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter - Fix Apps in Windows 8

Troubleshoot and Fix Store App Issues in Windows 8 and 8.1 with Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

information   Information
This tutorial will show you how to download and run the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter to help troubleshoot and fix common issues with Metro Store apps automatically in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.

Note   Note
If you've upgraded your PC from Windows 7 and can't run Windows 8 apps, it is probably because you have a 3rd party antivirus program on your PC that is blocking the apps. Change the app to be trusted in the AV program's settings.

If you're still unable to run apps, run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter below. This tool can automatically find and fix some problems with apps. The troubleshooter will work on all languages but the text in the troubleshooter is only in English.

If one or more of your Windows 8 apps contain an "X" on the app tile on the Start screen and won't open, try uninstalling and reinstalling one of the apps from the Windows Store.

Reference: I can't run Windows 8 apps after upgrading from Windows 7 - Microsoft Windows Help

In addition, Store apps will not run while signed in to an elevated account like the built-in Administrator account.

When you run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter, it will automatically check for the following common issues:

  • Protected audio is turned off
  • Some security settings are missing or have been changed
  • Service registration is missing or corrupt
  • Microsoft account required
  • Your system administrator has turned off some settings
  • Screen resolution is too low (at least 1024x768)
  • You are not connected to the Internet
  • User Account Control (UAC) has been disabled

Here's How:

1. Click/tap on either download button below to download the AppsDiagnostic.diagcab file from Microsoft.

1. Am I correct in thinking that the yellow triangle with the black exclamation mark under problems found is alerting you to the fact that the troubleshooter has found something that it cant fix?

2. When I run the Windows Store App troubleshooter it alerts me to the fact that a Microsoft Account is needed. I am using a Local Account so I ignore and click next it then checks for errors. Under problems found I get the yellow triangle against the Microsoft Account and also Service registration missing or corrupt which gets a green tick and fixed.
If I run it again the same messages are still there every time so Im a bit confused!! Can anybody shed light on why it says Service registration missing or corrupt which it says its fixed comes up every time and says fixed each time?

Everything seems to be working OK so Im not sure why it lists it under problems found when its already fixed it the previous times.

Hello Rick,

Q1) That's correct. Anything listed with an exclamation mark is a found issue.

Q2) It's alerting you that you need a Microsoft account since you do need one to be able to use modern apps that use a Microsoft service. For example: Mail, Store, Games, etc...

If you like, you could use step 5 below to sign in to apps with a Microsoft account while still being signed in to Windows with a local account.
Not sure about the "Service registration" issue, but could be related to not having a Microsoft account for why it keeps showing up.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Thanks for your advice Shawn...
1. I will set myself up with a Microsoft Account and then run the Windows Store App Troubleshooter again to see what messages I get. It wont harm my system if the App has been run a few times will it as Ive already run it a few times because I didn't really understand what was going on?
2. When I follow the instructions in your link to the Windows Store sign-in with a different Microsoft Account in Windows 8...in my case I'll be signed in to my PC with a Local Account..it says to click the arrow at the top when you've finished to go back to the Windows Store from the APP. Does that automatically sign you out of the Microsoft Account or do you have to do something manually to completely sign out and return back to my Local Account?

Q1) No. It will not hurt anything.

Q2) If you use step 5, you will only be signed in to the Store/apps with the Microsoft account, and not Windows 8. You will still be signed in to Windows 8 with your local account and not the Microsoft account.

Ive just followed the method above with Microsoft Account. The Service Registration and Microsoft Account messages have gone now but have been replaced by two more.
1. During the App Troubleshooting a message came up saying it wanted to Reset and open the Store so I clicked reset. Then there was a problem message saying my Display Adapter might be out of date... so I ran that troubleshooter and it didn't sort that out saying Hardware Changes might not have been detected. ( My Nvidia Graphics is right up to date with drivers and there are no problems at all with any devices in Device manager)...so that baffled me.
2. Another Identified problem is Windows Store configuration may be damaged....I don't know what that refers to. Windows Store seems to be working properly with no issues
Any ideas?

If you are not having any issues using the Store or modern apps now, then I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes those troubleshooting wizards get to picky on what they find.

That's what I was wondering Shawn. I went back and signed in with my original Local Account again and ran the troubleshooter again from there and the display and Windows store configuration errors have gone away but They have ben replaced again by the original two problems found in my first message i.e Microsoft Account needed and Service registration missing or corrupt which again says its fixed .
Out of curiosity I went to the Troubleshooting Apps in control panel Hardware and Devices and that one is saying Hardware changes might not have been detected too.
Its a clean Windows 8 to 8.1 installation done last week. There are no problems with the system and no errors in Device Manager and Ive updated all my drivers to 8.1 latest drivers last week too. Do you think it probably is the troubleshooting wizards being too picky because I don't see what else it could be

Yeah, most likely. When they can't find anything specific wrong, they will sometimes list possible causes to check instead.
