Windows Dream Scene in Consumer Preview.

lol

I tried to manually edit the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop for the Wallpaper string to a DreamScene file.

I signed out of my account and then back in. All it did was blank what I entered to nothing at all and the actual desktop was made into a solid color instead.

I tried a few things to hack this to work and no go so far...

Maybe if you compare the entries in that registry key above in Windows 7 running with DreamScene to Windows 8, the differences will offer clues or make it work.

Funny thing is that even the Power Options now have DreamScene settings included.

It's pure fluff. But I thought I would give it a whirl.

I never did implemented it in Windows 7.
I had a Vista Ultimate machine that I gave to my daughter. It is at her house.
If and when I make it over there I will export the pertinent Registry keys and do a comparison.

I'll allow this 'issue?' to use up another couple hours of my life and then give it a proper burial.
Thanks for trying!

At this point in time DreamScene in Windows 8 is looking more and more like a nightmare...ha ha

Actually there was a reason behind why Microsoft removed this feature while releasing Windows 7 after Vista
So, if these performance reasons are still alive then do not expect DS to return back

Probably spot on eralper. When pulling out all the stops to stop battery drain on a tablet,
one of the first things to go would be photo-realistic, animated screen savers.

If you just HAVE to have it, you could run any of those .mp4's full screen in a looping Windows Media Player and
then walk away from your computer. The 'OLD' Developer Preview Weather .mp4's are appropriate also.
That "Rain on Umbrella " one is nice.

Who would even use this? I didn't know anyone still used dreamscene. lol Since it's a major Lag problem if you booted up with it still on. Like Wind said it's just Fluff. It's just for show, I prefer a wallpaper over a animated one. Having anything animated on the desktop is just a pure RAM consumption sucker.

I use to do with hack with some Windows 7 installs I did. It was laggy on netbooks for obvious reasons. Laptops were great for it though, but since it's rendering VIDEO, it's a drain on battery. Heck, I remember even doing this on a bootable Windows 7 flash drive I made, it worked, but took a couple minutes to get going as flash is slow.

On the desktop, it's the best. I don't know, it was OK for a while, but at every boot up there would be a lag and the video goes fast forward to where it should be. It didn't seem too optimized in general. It was a feature very few people had and no one even knew about.

I tried dreamscene, but it totally raped my AMD laptop CPU. For people who have better computers, I guess you'll need to use 3rd party tools like vlc.
