How to Add a "Windows Defender" Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8 and 8.1​

   Information

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove a cascading (expandable) Windows Defender menu to the desktop context menu for all users in Windows 8 and 8.1 to be able to quickly open Windows Defender to settings, update, update and quick scan, quick scan, or full scan.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove this desktop context menu, but all users are able to use it.

EXAMPLE: Windows Defender Cascading Desktop Context Menu

Here's How:

1. To Add "Windows Defender" to the Desktop Context Menu

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​

Add_Windows-Defender_to_Desktop_Context_Menu.reg​

​

2. To Remove "Windows Defender" from the Desktop Context Menu
NOTE: This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​

​

Remove_Windows-Defender_from_Desktop_Context_Menu.reg​

​

​

​

3. Save the REG file to your desktop.

4. Double click/tap on the REG file to merge it, and click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted to approve the merge.

5. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

6. Right click or press and hold on your desktop to see the change.
NOTE: You can press the Windows+ D keys to go to the desktop.

I enabled the admin account and I ran the reg file.

but still the problem is not solved.

Did you run the .reg file while signed in to the built-in admin account?

Are you having any other issues with your Windows 8 installation?

I'll create something today that should work a bit better than these two, and will post back later with it.

To bad you can only scan a folder, and it's in the command prompt.

Ok. Looks like we have no option left but to dive into the registry unless you just really want to reinstall Windows 8 again.

If you are not comfortable doing this, then please let me know. I would recommend that you create a restore point before proceeding just to be safe.



1. Open regedit.

2. Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell​

3. Right click on shell, and click on Export. Save the .reg file to your desktop, then upload it here for me to take a look at.

4. Right click on shell, and click on Permissions.

5. Click on the Administrators group listed at the top, and look at the bottom permissions to see if it has Full Control checked under Allow like below. Post back with a screenshot of this.

6. Close the "Permissions for shell" dialog, and Registry Editor.

Well, after looking at your exported .reg file, the .reg file from the tutorial did not get merged completely. None of the submenu items got merged.

Either you merged the wrong .reg file (should be from step 1), didn't approve all of the prompts at step 4, or something is blocking the .reg file from merging.

Try temporarily disabling any 3rd party AV or malware program to see if it you are able to fully merge the .reg file in step 1 to have the context menu work for you.

Nar, Windows Defender wouldn't cause an issue.

I'm afraid that I don't know why it's not merging completely for you since it always works fine on all my installations. I'm stumped.

You might give it a try again the next time you do a clean install of Windows 8.
