Windows Blue - small look at leaked build 9364

Leaked Windows Blue build 9364 reveals multiple Live Tile sizes, same-width side-by-side apps

Notable adjustments include larger and smaller Live Tiles, enabling a bit more Start screen customization, along with an updated side-by-side app view, which boosts multitasking efficiency by displaying two applications with matching width. Other additions include a Play option under the Devices panel, a screenshot button on the Share sidebar, and Internet Explorer 11, which comes packaged with the new OS.

also saw even better skydrive integration. still a work in progress as they use a number of placeholders.

DotNet 3.5 isnt downloading / installing here.
@Jimbo: Did you get it working ?

Off-Line Install also doesnt work !
I guess the source files are broken. I will try to install with RTM image.

Still no go. I tried Win8 Pro and Ent RTM images with no luck.

Now it worked. I removed /ALL and /LIMITACCESS switches:

World plus Dog is speaking out very loudly when it comes to what people want from Windows 8, it's just that Microsoft appears to have it's own agenda and doesn't give a rats about what people think. It harks very much to the way that Steve Jobs operated, but whether Microsoft will be as successful with that attitude is another thing.

Problem with VBOX Guest Additions and Shared Folders...

I've installed "Guest Additions" in compatibility mode (Windows 8), and setup finished without any error messages. Everything is working fine, except "Shared Folders". When I click on the folder icon, a message pops up saying that "Guest Additions" need to be installed in order to use the feature. I noticed that there's a problem with a virtual device in "Device Manager", what I think is causing the problem.

Anyone?

~update~

I'm downloading VMWARE to see if it's a VBOX only thing

Like Steve Jobs or not you cannot take away from the guy that he was great at marketing and 'reading' what was required. Managed to create a cult like following around the brand so take my hat off to him.

Just tried out the leaked Blue beta on direct hardware installed onto secondary hard drive with primary hard drive removed (not dual boot).

Seems there's a lot of fixes and improvements under the hood for the desktop most notably a new processor power management called: Latency sensitivity hint processor performance, older software compatibility fixes (at least in my case where one of my crucial Lenovo software/driver did not work with Windows 8 and now works perfectly in Blue) and the touch keyboard toolbar bug coming back after reboot/shutdown has been fixed (was a very annoying bug in Windows 8).

ATM, I have no negative comments...

I've tried it in on a VM. Now I want to see how it performs in real hardware. Also some VBOX features arent working properly, like shared folders. I'll disconnect all HDDs in my secondary rig and install it in an old 40GB.

Hi there
@vrosa -- didn't need net 3.5 -- although it can be installed manually (DISM etc).

Works fine in VMware -- Photoshop and Office 2010 installed without any problems and Windows updates work fine for Office 2010 and Windows defender --no updates yet for Windows itself.

Pity it's the PRO version rather than the Enterprise version as I'd like to try out a Windows to Go.

No problems either with IE 11 -- seems slicker than IE 10 -- to get it in NON metro mode pin it to your Taskbar from the start screen.

Otherwise apart from a little USB problem I had in VMware (my problem -- my USB3 card wasn't seated into the MOBO properly), I haven't had any glitches.

Now waiting for the next build or a GENUINE X-64 build. There's a FAKE (ORION) version on some of the more popular torrent sites --this is a "WINDOWS BLUE" edition somebody has hobbled up -- this one IS a fake. The screenshots etc and versions most of us have been using seem to be the 100% legit version.

Expires BTW Jan 15 2015 - so if you want to trial a W8 version for 10 months -- but remember it's only a 32 bit version.

I'm going to try it now on REAL hardware on an isolated old laptop.

Cheers
jimbo

For those that would like to work the metro apps in standard windows mode ModernMix works fine. Also in VMware the network works without any problems (so far). The "Start Screen" comes with a "Customize" mode (right click on the start screen) this may or may not help some that are not overly fond of the start screen.

Arstechnica has a nice article on some of the things seen in Blue:

Windows Blue leaks: More Metro, more multitasking | Ars Technica

excerpts:

It's this settings app where most of the changes can be found. The Windows 8 settings app forces you to go to the desktop Control Panel for lots of mundane settings—for example, anything to do with the network, changing the screen resolution, or setting the system time. These features (and more) are now found in the Metro-style settings app.

more-settings.png

The app itself has been reorganized to have a two-level hierarchy for its settings, with most sections having a number of subsections. This is generally sensible; some of the sections in the current settings app are rather long and sprawling, filled with essentially unrelated configuration knobs all bundled together.

The settings app also indicates that SkyDrive is gaining deeper integration into the operating system, with free space management, device backups, and file syncing all exposed.

The other significant difference is how multitasking is handled. Windows 8 sports a snap view, in which two Metro apps can be viewed side-by-side. One app is fixed to a 320-pixel-wide column, with the other taking the remainder of the space. In the leaked Blue version, this has become a whole lot more flexible. First, the split between the apps is now flexible. There seems to be a minimum width of 320 pixels or so, but you can now have, say, a 50/50 split if you prefer.

three-apps-side-by-side.png

Second, you can now view more than two apps side-by-side. The limit appears to be governed by your monitor's resolution. At 1920×1080, three apps can be shown side-by-side; at 2560×1440, this goes up to 4. The flexible split is maintained.

Also hidden away, and currently with no obvious way of accessing it, there are signs that Microsoft is working on a Metro-style file management app; there's a FileManager app on the system that uses the WinRT API.

Hi there
Windows 7 Classic Games install on "Blue" just fine too = so if you like the "Old" spider Solitaire etc - not the rubbish ones from the store -- you can continue using.

BTW the STORE doesn't work so far in "Blue" -- not that I'm bothered -- can't see myself using that stuff anyway -- and Ms isn't going to be able to force big companies like Adobe to distribute their software through the store either.

@dirtyvu --your link should be changed to Windows Blue leaks: More Metro, more multitasking | Ars Technica
