Solved Windows Activation Error code: 0x8007232B

Hey all,

I'm trying to activate a computer that my girlfriend bought a year ago. We didn't notice anything wrong, but its more likely we didn't look to hard.
Anyways, when trying to activate online I get Error Code: 0x8007232B, DNS name does not exist. My guess, after browsing a loooot of internet, is the guy we bought the computer off of used a exploit to put a false version of windows on the computer. KMS servers or something.

I will attach the Windows Diagnostic file, as well as the product keys from ShowKey.

My question is, what happens now? Do I leave activation alone, or do I have to return to OEM state? If I do have to return to OEM state, will any data be lost? Anything else I should be warned about as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thank Ya!

Welcome to the forum. Please delete the key file before anyone else trys to use it. set your dns to 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 have you got a server running on the pc?

Thanks for looking out, I didn't even think of anyone using my keys.
As to the other questions, I will change the dns when I get the chance and come back to the thread; as of right now I don't believe there is a server running on the pc nor have we ever set up a server. I have no knowledge of a server unless thats something that happens automatically or the seller did on his own.

Yes, that is a bogus installation - You will need a proper key.

I figured that was going to end up being the case. I'll still try Samuria's tips just to see. Assuming it still doesn't activate, what are my options? Do I have to buy a new key/Windows edition? Or is it possible to go back to OEM Windows state without data loss? Is doing nothing an option as well, if we don't lose functionality with the computer I don't want to worry about changing it

Run this and post results see if it tells us about any kms post both files

Please download and save FRST 64bit or FRST 32 bit to your Desktop.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST.exe

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST64.exe

Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Make sure that Addition option is checked.
Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back .
The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe).

No sign of a kms server
Check in IE you dont have a proxy set
set dns to 208.67.220.220 & 208.67.222.222

Open CMD as admin.
Type in slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX replace xx with your wndows key

I uninstalled AVG and AVAST for now. I also had a proxy server in IE, but I disabled that for the following steps.
I also watched the video and followed your steps, and got "Windows key Installed". But then I went to see if it was activated and it remains unchanged. Trying to activate it online yields the same error and inputting the key manually informs me that the key doesn't work.

I'm willing to try something else, but I think Superfly may be right and that it isn't quite a "legitimate" installation of Windows on this computer right now.

You can just install Win 8.1 (not Pro) and the OEM key will activate it....

Assuming there isn't another solution to this, this seems simple enough. Is it as easy as googling "Windows 8.1 Installation?" I want this to be legitimate as possible. I am still curious if there will be data loss though; I would prefer to avoid that but I understand if its necessary.

Looking forward to your replies, I think we're close to figuring this out

You can use the Media Creation Tool to get the installation media.

You won't be able to upgrade the existing installation and keep data (thus backup personal data beforehand)

Do a clean install of 8.1 and copy back personal data.

That's all fully legit.

Doing an upgrade on a previously illegitimate installation would not be good advice.

Alright understood. I'll try to go through those steps whenever is most convenient; I'll probably be back on the forums to get a walkthrough with that too lol. I'll mark this as solved!

Samuria, Superfly thank you both! Its unfortunate that we were sold a machine with illegitimate OS, but I appreciate both of you trying to help me activate it! This has been very helpful and informative
