Windows 8 x64 only?

Honestly, there should be a 64 bit only Windows by now. All, if not most, computers that are coming out HAVE 64 bit systems installed. Already, Windows is behind Apple in developing 64 bit. Snow Leopard is, what, 64 bit only, and the Lion is coming out soon. Microsoft could possibly see their operating systems become obsolete if they dont push forward for a 64 bit system.

Apple and Linux have x64 and x64 browsers. But Apple is an all in one provider, so they can make x64, and provide the x64 apps. Linux is open source, so x64 apps become available. Miscosoft however, is in the software business. So they walk the line of not wanting to alienate x86 users and all the apps they have purchased, and wanting to sell new x64 apps. Most program developers would switch to x64 if that was clearly the direction they had to go. By making x64 OS that easily use x86 apps, there isn't nearly as much motivation to write for x64. By the time they all do, we will be on to 128bit? A Guy

I'm not quite understanding your point. Microsoft creates both flavors of x86 and x64. So really there is no reason to argue about it. If you want 64 bit then go ahead and use 64 bit. Its all about money. Want more customers, give the customers a wide range of options.

The point is the title of the thread, "Windows 8 x64 only?". I use x64, but I was speaking to what this thread is about, lol. A Guy

I was a early adopter of Vista & without giving it much thought I bought a system with only 1GB RAM, such a terrible experience which I don't wish to repeat again.

If you thought 1GB was bad - you should have tried it with 512mb :shock:

My sisters laptop only had 512mb until I added more. It was bloody painful to use...

A lot of 'Vista Ready' PC's were being sold when 512mb was the 'norm' at the time. In hindsight, no wonder some people actually had legitimate complaints about Vista .

If you want 64 bit then go ahead and use 64 bit. Its all about money. Want more customers, give the customers a wide range of options.

The problem being that by keeping customers happy - it has seriously hampered the proper advancement of native x64 usage.

There has to be a cut off point somewhere.

The average consumer pc is being shipped with between 2-4 Gb of ram and 250GB+ HDDs. I feel that this would be a great time to drop x86. Thanks to WOW32 we can emulate 32bit programs.

Yeah, i would imagine by the time Windows 8 is released 32 bit will be dead in the water and everyone can just move on.

If Microsoft wants to make more money; then they should still make 32-bit. IMHO.
Snow Leopard is 32-bit OS as well; it just can't run PowerPC CPUs.

If there's still anyone subscribed to this thread, I would have to agree, x64 only. Most manufacturers are already phasing out 32-bit processors, and for those still using one, they are probably old enough that you wouldn't want to run a cutting edge OS like Windows 8 in the first place. Also, I do realize that there are still some with a relatively new and powerful 32-bit processor, but as long as Microsoft supports them, they will be used, some people just don't get that.

We had Windows XP for 10 years to cover 32bit computing. Now we have Windows 7 in 32bit form as well. So Windows 7 should be able to do the job 10 years. Windows 8 should be 64bit and move forward. Windows Server 8 64bit and 128bit.

Yes I agree. The 32 bit soft can run on windows 64, all processor are 64 bit today and the old PC 32 bit can't be run windows 8 normally.

There will be 32-bit OS versions for Windows 8, there are big businesses that still use old software that are not capable of running of 64-bit OS's.
