My Windows 8 laptop won't recognise my CD. When I go to Device Manager, the drive shows and the device status under properties says the device is working properly but it my CD still isn't recognised. Please help!

You should provide more details, otherwise the suggestions may be pointless. First of all, do you see the CD drive in the device manager and it works properly (no yellow mark near to device name), right? If so, try to insert different CDs in your drive and see the result. Of course, CDs (or DVDs) should not be damaged, i.e. their content should be visible on any other PC. After this check, you can conclude whether your device can't read any disc at all or only a particular disc. Then it may be a result of wrongly installed driver, other software misconfiguration, or, contrary, the hardware problem when you need to clean the optical sensor or, if it doesn't help, replace the device. BTW, you can solve this problem temporary using an external USB-connected CD drive.
