Windows 8 will not boot

Hi

I've hunted over the net for a solution to this (and wasted some time trying to contact MS ), hoping someone here may have come across this.

Computer crashed a few days ago (hadn't installed anything recently or made any changes, it just went). Since then, I am getting the following error message on start-up:

"An unexpected I/O error has occurred. Error code: 0xc00000e9 This problem can happen when a removable storage device is removed while it's in use or is failing. Properly connecting any removable storage and resetting your PC may fix this problem."

There is nothing connected to the laptop at all. F8 to get to start-up settings just loops it back round to this message. Same if I try to book from the install disk to do a repair, so I can't get out of the error screen. This is on Win 8, not 8.1.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

I can't get past the error on start up, it won't boot far enough to allow me to do anything like that. Trying to get into advanced options just loops it back to the error.
