Windows 8 - What do you think?

I've been playing with it all day. I think it SUCKS! I can't stand Metro. Who the hell thought this was a good idea for the desktop!? I know you can use the registry hack to disable Metro, but then it is basically Windows 7. I see no point in upgrading. For the first time I'm considering skipping a new release. I've never done that before.

I skipped Vista. :p

I waited a while before trying Vista just because of all the negative things people were saying about it. I actually believed it sucked....that was until I tried it. I still don't understand all the hate for Vista. Vista 64bit has been 100% rock stable and fast for me....same as with Windows 7.

Windows 8 might as well be called Windows 7 touchscreen addition. :p

Nice! :)

Or, maybe, trouble with Metro edition.

Really, it's not that bad - just different.

I think what MS is targeting, eventually, is the iPhone and iPad market. Think about it, your smart phone or tablet looks the same as your PC, pretty much.

Homogenization and comfort will become keywords in the near future for MS.

It really really sucks.

I can't believe the final will be anything like this.

So far, pretty much. Once you get used to it, it's not so bad.

As I mentioned above, MS really, really wants this to go over so it can take over the smart phone and tablet markets (a la iPhone and iPad) and have a fairly homogenous user experience.

I like the new additions to Windows Explorer so far, and I'm sure there are other improvements here and there we will find out about in time. In general though, I think it sucks as it is right now because the new UI is only there to boost their efforts on the mobile space and it represents a huge step backwards for desktop users like me. I don't want to be too harsh though because it's only a preview after all and it's all subject to change. Or at least I'm hoping so.

I'm truly in love with.

"Glitches" like the Start Menu and Metro Apps not able to close 'em entirely, I hope will be fixed in final release ( fine-tune ). It's too early and we're just talking for Dev build.

If not, I guess I must get used to.

Also, I extremely love the Square Design the Desktop got. I've an "issue" with the curves in 7. Along with Ribbon, my Explorer shines.

This is my first full day with 8 but here goes:
As a home use OS it has potential if understood but I do not see it as a good replacement for most people. The metro interface looks fun but all in all that in itself needs to be poked and prodded into submission. Sorry guys I'm just a lowly technician but I can not for the life of me see my clients trying to acclimate themselves to this. And even the more advanced settings are hard to get to. If I can barely navigate it how can my clients? Hell I spent four hours training a teacher on how to use her smart board and calibrate it should I not be there and that was simple. I can just picture endless calls at two am "How do I get to my downloads again?" Microsoft ether blessed me or cursed me Im not sure yet lol. And I mean it they WILL call me... all... the ... time unless I convince them to stay away from this hot mess til microsoft gets over its midlife crisis!
For a tab its alright but even then I can see it hogging the battery life like crazy if they arnt careful. The only advantage of having a Windows tab is for home groups and networks. Windows plays nice with windows. Asside from that this is a no go for me. Sorry.

Hi, kira! :)

Give it time.
If you hang in there with the pre-beta (8102) and then move on to the next pre-beta (if there is one) and, then, move on to the beta and then the RTM and then the release version, you'll be better prepared to help your clients.

I usually use it for just a few hours a day.
Today is an exception as I left it running all day and am now using it to watch MNF (Monday Night Football).

It's not your main OS, hopefully. :)

You have a good point. Apparently I hate change lol. No it's not my only OS. I pulled a dual boot with my previous 7 on both my desk top and laptop to let it really interact with my hardware instead of piggybacking in virtual (gotta give it a fighting chance). I also use linux and droid. My guy walked in on me today and found this : Me at my desk in front of my desktop, my laptop to my left, texting on my droid phone with angry birds on hold on the china tablet lol. He just kinda backed out slowly and offered me a red bull. Windows 8 will be fine I just needed to whine ;)

You have fortunate clients, kira! :)

Easy on the RedBull, though, OK? I prefer Diet Coke in copious quantities (and maybe a beer or two or three). ;)

Goodnight, kira. :)

Still, your interest in testing out the pre-beta 8102 will be a great benefit to your clients. Keep up the good work.

I like to whine, too, at times and I imagine there will be times when we'll be whining together. :)

Well I have to say Metro (as it is) is a bit sucky...... I can't imagine me having to re teach an entire company how to use a computer........

And on a slightly more personal note i have just done two benches (fraps) on The Witcher 2 with and without metro enabled and FPS drops by on average 10fps when enabled so i still think there is work to be done...... (not scientific i am going to do some testing and see)

metro would be nice if i did not have to sacrifice the "old" start menu to have it.

Although i do like it in blue:

Well, As I have said in a couple of other threads, I have an Asus Transformer tablet and android phone. I like those. My smokin' fast desktop doesn't need a mobile device interface. I used it for a day and went back. I will sit on it for a week and try again. I am a bit out on the whole thing right now though. I hope in the future, they give the normal desktop option (not the current one that looks like Windows 3.11). It is faster, and thats a plus. I am apparently abhorent to major change though. Must be my old age. So after that ramble, I will reserve my final judgement, but in my book I REALLY love Win 7 and hope they keep some of that functionality there.

mikdl, can you explain how you got your desktop to look like that (background etc...) maybe if iI could customize it (highly) I might like it better. Thanks in advance.Ditzzo
