Each time I try the Windows 8 upgrade assistant I get the following error: "We can't connect right now...Check your Internet connection and try again". Apparently, a number of people are having this issue

Steps to try and solve:

Disabled AV and Firewall both software and the router firewall. Checked to make sure date/time was correct. Went to a different location so the IP address would be different. Tried LAN connection. Tried on 3 different machines, both 32 bit and 64 bit. My key is a 64 bit key. At each machine, the key passes the check. But, I always have the same error. After each failed attempt, I deleted the folder: "C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebSetup\Panther" where the upgrade assistant stores info about previous attempts.

I wish Microsoft would release the ISO links like they did for Win 7

Try the link in your email.

Have you tried the email link?
My concern is not just about my own upgrade. I manage several PCs for friends and family. I want the ISO links so I can perform clean installs or upgrades. I don't want to have to sit and wait for each one to download every time. With Win 7 I had ISO disks for every version of Win 7, so I could be prepared for Home premium or Pro, whatever the user had. With Win 8 that is proving to be difficult.

Have you paid for the Upgrade?

Yes, but like I said, I'm trying to get ISOs for future upgrades and reformats that I will inevitably be performing.

Try the download link from the email, or there is a order link for the back up DVD's.

Why should one have to pay extra for back up DVDs? Where are the ISO links like those for Win7. The link in my email will cover only me.

There aren't any official links for Windows 8 ISO's, non that I know of anyway, other than TechNet or MSDN. Those are subscription services so the average Joe is SOL.

The Windows 7 download links are for paid for upgrade/full retail ISO's, which are being misused by OEM manufacturer's PC owners, MS have closed that back door.

You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

Each time I try the Windows 8 upgrade assistant I get the following error: "We can't connect right now...Check your Internet connection and try again".
  • If you use the "Microsoft download tool" you have to enter your key.
  • If the key is blocked by Microsoft you also get this misleading error "We can't connect right now...Check your Internet connection and try again".

Well, that isn't the case here because the key passes inspection and then I get the error. It doesn't look like there is a good solution to this problem. Many people have documented this problem on the MSFT forum and they haven't done anything to fix it. And it looks like due to piracy concerns, that MSFT is not going to release the ISO links like they did for Win 7. So, I guess the next time I need to reformat, I will just have to have MSFT send me the install DVD

Whose inspection ? Windows download tool ? Nothing worth.

Try to enter your key whilst not online. "Windows download tool" says: Key is OK. So it checks only whether the key is "right"; but not whether the key is blocked. Only when the download is started, it is tested whether the key was blocked.

Microsoft will only replace Retail DVD's, not OEM manufacturer's DVD's, for OEM manufacturer's, you can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.
