Windows 8 - too many updates to install, updates fail. Install one by one??

I have a Lenovo G780 laptop which was having all kinds of problems (terribly slow boots, random freezes, etc) so I decided to do a "Refresh" update (all files kept intact, O/S is re-installed from files on the hard drive).

This went well but now I'm having problems installing the updates (which I need to do before I can upgrade it to Windows 8.1 )

The problem seems to be the amount of updates that are installed in one go - there's hundreds of Megabytes of them and the laptop just spent ages installing them - however during one of the essential reboots it came up with this error:

"Failure configuring Windows updates
Reverting changes"

As I type this it's still ongoing so I'm sat here wondering if ALL of the updates are being removed (meaning I'll have to start again .....).

Once that's finished is there any way that I can install just one or two updates at a time? I don't recall seeing a way to do that.

Thanks

My advice would be to download the Correct Win 8.1 (version and language) ISO using the Media Creation Tool Download Windows 8.1 Save it as an ISO on your desktop. Mount the ISO and run setup as admin keeping your settings and apps. After that you'll still have a little over 1 GBs of updates to install but the chances of any failing will be a lot less.

Install all the Important Updates and the optional ones as well except The "Preview of Rollup" ones and the following:
KB3046480
KB3080149
KB3140185
kb3150513

Frankly I gave up on the Factory Install on My G780 "Gremlin" in around 4 Months and did a Clean Fresh Install.

Thanks, I'll give that a go (once my laptop has finished "reverting changes" which it's now been doing for well over an hour).

I would advice against installing any optional updates and some of the "important" ones.

I haven't tried it yet but the latest version of NTLite should be able to download and integrate the necessary critical updates.
