Windows 8 RTM vs Retail Boxed DVD

Hi, I think the title says it all. Is there any difference between the RTM versions of Windows 8 (also available on MSDN / Technet) and the retail Boxed DVD version in terms of features or are they exactly the same (bit to bit)?

Eh, I'm willing to bet they're the same.

Of course dell or hp like to throw in their kinks with every computer they sell, but otherwise the os shouldn't be much different.

Is that what you are asking?

By kinks I mean (for instance) dell has a rocket dock (similar to that of a Mac OS computer) that comes when you buy a dell pc... Besides those minor changes they are, I'm sure, the same.

Has anyone compared the version / build number of an RTM Windows 8 with that of the boxed DVD version? I think that would tell us if either one is the latest, right?

You'll most likely get the latest build if you download...

The DVD version might be a few updates off.

Build 9200 is the latest if I'm correct.

The DVDs won't be any older than that I don't think.

Technically the online version of Windows 8 is not the RTM version.

Or RTM refers to both versions, idk.

MSDN versions which are floating about are install.wim.

The upgrade download version is install.esd.

No idea what the retail boxed version is.

You are much better getting hold of the install.wim version, if you can.

I agree with SIW, it should have all the latest updates already in it, will save you time by not making you spare start your pc ever perky time it finds a new update.

If I am not mistaken when you buy the retail you get 64 and 32 bit DVDs in the box.

Almost never is RTM different from retail. Only an incredibly rare major goof would be fixed between RTM and retail. I am using a Technet download now. We"ll actually I am on my MacBook Pro right now.

I read features? It depends: is it plain Win8, or Pro or Enterprise?

Assuming it's an original disk, the Retail and the RTM are the same, if it's a wim or esd file it's not important, the content is the same.
