I had the same sloow running installation - try:-

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

which allows you to drag the screen to any old resolution and fixes the slow speed & non-working apps.

Hi,

I installed the Preview release from within the CP version using the RP udgrade assistant. As this is a multi-disk multi-boot system I can see several folders that seem out of tune with a regular build when a drive letter is assigned to the W8 install from within another OS.

These are the typical "Windows.old" (15+ Gb) , unknown $WINDOWS.~BT" (hidden, 5.71 Gb ) and a folder called "ESD" (hidden and read only, 2.62 Gb ).
While it's easy to guess what the first one is, the others seem to both contain setup folders.
I suppose one of them is the download that was used during install but the other one is a bit of question mark to me.

Anyone?

Cheers, ;)

I'm not using W8, so forgive me if I'm off base. But I'm assuming W8 still has the cleanmgr.exe? Would the cleanmgr /sageset:99 command enable the option that may clean these? Temporary windows installation files perhaps? ESD is apparently where the downloaded windows setup files are stored. $WINDOWS.~BT is also a temporary install folder. In Vista, it was a file created when an upgrade failed ( Log files that are created when you upgrade to Windows Vista from an earlier version of Windows )

whats the problem i tried downloading twice using IDM both times i get wrong hash, what may be the problem? is it with IDM? damm with my slow net dl 7gb and still dint get it :(

Try downloading the iso image directly. Often 3rd party downloaders are nothing but a problem to begin with.

I did download it with IDM without problem from This Official Site also.

My Problem is, I was able to install it to my old office dual-core desktop, but not to my ASUS K42F (Core i3). The JMicron LAN driver from MS seemed installed correctly in device manager in the network connection marked as unplugged though I changed the cable many times (work well with other machines). Tried to install the latest JMicron native driver but failed.

Weird. As WCP worked pretty well with it. Now I just have WCP back to my ASUS. :(

The two methods most commonly used once you have a success installing any adapter drive is the Network & Sharing Center troubleshooter and powering everything down before unplugging the modem used for about a half minute. That of course depends on the type of modem as well as how it plugged into by usb or ethernet. With the Lan that would be the RJ-45 type cable.

Once you have unplugged the dsl or cable modem for the half minute or so and plug that back if not having an on/off switch on it you watch as that resyncs with the ISP and then power up the system and allow the fresh detection of both the WLan and should see the prompt for selection of Home, Work, and Public to select the Home option for the network setting.

With a NetGear nic card here I never even bothered installing any driver since both 7 and 8 even the other OS will automatically install a generic driver and configure the established connection tight away. The only problem connecting with 8 was seen on VM Player when one release was problematic soon to be followed by another release a few months with the bugs fixed.

Unfortunately VM Player now needs an even newer release for the RP to get it installed there. :(

never mind problem solved, i posted before too, couldnt find, may be the solution isnt legal i guess!!!

For the first time ever, I'm actually not even going to bother downloading the RP. I've always been keen to try out every new windows version and see what's on offer, even Vista, but I'm so extremely disappointed with this version of Windows, I'm not even going to try it anymore.. Totally because of the lack of desktop support/metro interface and the way applications are run.

I know... I'm a sad excuse for a human being... Perhaps I'm getting old and the "tinkerer" side of me is fading into oblivion. *sigh*

Touch screen *shudder* lol.

You're okay, Tanya. Windows 7 works fine, and if you think MS is having a hard time killing off XP, wait until they try to get rid of 7. If you don't like Windows 8, that's fine. Windows 7 will do everything you need.

W7 has been doing everything i need since it was first in beta finding the 32bit 7 would run things the 32bit Vista wouldn't! The backward compatibility saw a major improvement.

With 8 however many things are seeing a reverse trend in that area. While MS stressed OEMs to have device drivers and updated versions of things ready for 7 not too much besides Metro apps has been seen for 8! I think the software companies already realize that 8 is likely to flop "Big Time"! and are in no hurry to rush new stuff out.

What MS has done with 8 is rather then follow a successful trend 7 enjoyed has now figuratively abandoned the all too familiar desktop OS for something else. Despite whateven security and other improvements 8 would bring in most are not too happy after a first look at it!

Takes long enough doesn't it?! For a normal install by way of dvd on a 22x dvd drive or by USB Install Key(8gb flash drive) it seems to take as long as Vista or XP while the average for 7 was about 20min.! With the CP and now the RP they both took about 20min. just to load up to the Install Now screen!

I think the slow installation is a problem of the DVD reader. I found it to be faster when I installed directly from the .iso in Virtual Box.

Interesting but it sounds like a hardware compatibility issue to me. I installed it on my Laptop, Desktop and Tablet and they all installed in about 12 minutes or less to the setup user screen.

However, I just noticed that I was installing it all natively and unless I misunderstand, you were installing it in a virtual machine, right?

I could not have said that any better myself.....I will not be running Win8 on my dell laptop.....not compatible with p4-m processor/bios....no install (fail.....it ran Win7 perfectly......what we appear to have here is a Microsoft attempt to add locked boot loaders to our personal hardware just like in the mobile market. there is no level of hell too deep for companies that think they own our devices or data and who think they should be able to dictate terms and conditions....we Americans deserve to suffer trough this kind of hell as we have consistently given companies a pass on poor customer relations and lousy hardware......no excuses are really necessary for companies with a just accept it attitude because you owe us your business.

The problem with the unsupported cpu is that it does not support certain features of it that is required. There is also a work around for that but I am not sure what it is. (I saw the solution but did not save the site.) The fact that your 9 year old processor is not supported does not mean that Microsoft is trying to screw you over or lock you down.

I keep hearing folks complain about this but not one so far has bothered to look up a solution.

I think the slow installation is a problem of the DVD reader. I found it to be faster when I installed directly from the .iso in Virtual Box.

Since I planned to see the RP installed on VM Player as well as on the second OS drive I simply burned the iso to disk since the installation to VM afterwards would either be by disk or using the add new drive to mount the iso for installing it there as seen with the CP.

As far as wear on the pair of optical drives having an effect I wouldn't be surprised in the least. I went back to ide optical since the sata dvd burner would suddenly start making grinding noises and simply quit. Yet the other installs to flash as far as a larger Linux distro which takes about the same amount of time as 7 or slightly longer as well as any fresh install of 7 by disk never saw a lengthy wait to load to the screen and the last configuration prior to reaching the desktop.

It took about the same amount of time as a recent Vista install using a flash drive.

From the ISO on a memory stick mine installed in 15 minutes.

Had the 8gb flash drive tied up for 7 USB Install Key! :D Despite RT 7 Lite I still ended up needing to install SP1 separately on the latest clean install of 7 that was needed.

Seeing the new lock screen pushed on you at first is how they get you by having you enter your Windows Live id until you discover later you can go into the Control Panel>Users and set up a local account which then will boot straight up to the ... Start screen! With a local account you can skip entering any password to see the automatic logon but still have to hit that desktop button.

You get thrown off at first when going to install the CP and now the RP where you have to log into your Live account until you see how to change that around. The local account operates just like any admin account would for a previous version.

I can be wrong, but from what I noticed is that it took shorter time from bootable memory stick because it skips the first step (done longer in DVD reader). It just jumps to second step after few seconds.
