Windows 8 Release Preview freezing

The release preview is freezing when I use Chrome or IE when playing internet games or video. When I try to exit the browser it doesn't allow me to but I can get back to the METRO interface but clicking on icons fails to run anything.

One thing I had to do in the previous version of windows was disable hardware acceleration under settings in video in order to stop the crashing.

I had problems with Chrome and it remembering my profile. I went to the folder (default) where my details are stored and renamed it. It started fine then second time around it wouldn't work. The same process would work all over again but I think its a disk problem.

Any ideas ? I did download the latest HP Drivers for video with no luck. The hard disk had to be checked several times when booting up because I had to pull the power cable in order to restart.

**edit, it just crashed again while posting this thread. I was only browsing with text pages so I'm clueless as to what is causing the crashes. It's like it doesn't support dynamic web pages or something. Chrome isn't working well at all, the scroll bars wont work and the pages tries to keep loading for ages with no progression. any ideas ?

same issues, and i can confirm a crash without chrome open at all (so it's not chrome)...
I'm using ivy bridge with an h77 board. i had the same issues with windows 8 consumer preview, and gave up with that...
i thought this would be solved by now... I do run raid5 with intel's h77 and installed release and beta 11.5 intel rapid storage technology driver.

i suspect the intel video drivers, because a friend is running w8 fine and doesn't use built in graphics. but i certainly can't be sure... the machine seems very likely to not crash if i'm not interacting with it locally... (I've never seen it crash while accessing it via remote desktop, or using it as a file server)
I'm using the built-in 9.17.10.2736 driver for intel HD graphics 4000, which is slightly newer than the currently available windows 8 beta driver from intel.

the rest of the drivers i was getting crashes with built-in, and after updating to latest win7 64-bit releases.

i have 8GB samsung ddr3 1600, i5 3570k quad core ivy bridge, intel dh77df motherboard, apple cinema display 27" LED displayport, dell 24" led via dvi, intel 320 160GB SSD, 4x3TB raid5...

other programs i have installed but haven't ruled out 100%, plex media server, utorrent, google drive (although i didnt have this when i had the same freezing in windows 8 consumer preview), vmware player, firefox 12,

this is windows 8 release preview x64

I have the same issue. I can go about 2 hours now in Chrome before I get the hang. It was much worse (about 5 - 10 minutes) before I set Chrome to Windows 7 compatibility. I am trying to figure out if there is a "tell" before it happens so I can reboot without have to power cycle.

Same problem here. Some say it is the graphics driver. Unfortunately there is no Win8 version for my GPU.

Same issue.

Core i7 2600k

Reinstalled over 5 times.

Fresh install seems to reduce the frequency of the problem.

Problem does not seem exclusive to Chrome + flash, although it does trigger it faster, sometimes within minutes of entering desktop.

Trying to isolate variables.

Radeon HD6900. Crash always precedes with sound stuttering (with or without media playing, though more often with), followed by a few seconds of responsiveness, i.e. enter start screen, switch between tabs though chrome interface is freezed. Going to try running with flash disabled for a while. I remember fixing a similar issue in the release candidate, had something to do with incompatibility with onboard HD sound. Going to disable that last. Final hunch is Crucial M4 SSD issue, testing

And it just froze again while typing msg, 5 minutes from boot.

Chrome has problems with Flash because Chrome has its own flash plug in which is part of the Chrome installation, but some webpages will try and use other Flash plug-ins installed on your system (for other browsers incl. IE) too.

Chrome about: plugins (no space - : p smiley! :p)will bring a list of plug-ins that are available - if you see something like this, you will have trouble:

Flash (3 files) - Version: 11.3.31.103Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31

3 files are available to handle one webpage.

click the [+] details
control, and disable the internal flash plugins for Chrome located in

C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome SxS\Application\21.0.1163.0\gcswf32.dll
where <USERNAME> is your login

just leaving the one in

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_11_2_202_235.dll

for all your browsers to use.

Should speed things up too.

Reduced frequency of freezes but did not fix issue. Problem seems wide spread.

Flash doesn't seem to be culprit, but when it certainly precipitates issues when playing media.

All drivers up to date. Still freezes with nothing at startup.

Programs like cpuz, gpuz, hwmonitor also causes instant lock up.

See rafael's post about possible network i/o problem, but no solution.

It was just a fix for Chrome, not the freezing - freezes are not diagnostic since they often do not bluescreen. I am fairly certain that the reason for all the freezes is the FTH - the Fault Tolerant Heap - which was introduced in Windows 7 to reduce the frequency of crashes, by allowing memory overwrites to exist in a safe area of memory until hopefully they terminate naturally, instead of crashing everything sooner. By permitting faulty processes, they get away with not being caught in the act.

In beta software - like the Windows 8 previews, in my opinion only, it really should not be enabled when out in the real world without a fully working set of drivers for 99.99% of all devices that may be encountered on a PC.

Google "Fault tolerant heap" and read the top few results to learn about it, and how to disable it or read here:

http://www.eightforums.com/crashes-debugging/6593-annoying-freezing-issue.html#post93902

However, if disabled, Windows 8 may be totally unusable for you, instead of just being wildly unstable - but there should be BSODs to keep the crash analysts happy - and to report back to Microsoft.

It also should be disabled immediately after installation of Windows 8, before any bad behaviour happens. Otherwise, the crashing processes are sandboxed until registry changes are made to reset the FTH behaviour.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think I solved my problem.

ATI Event Manager service (ATIeRecord in Event logs) was failing catastrophically somehow.

I've disabled it from running and Currently I'm 16+ hours freeze free.

Occasionally there's still brief whole system slow downs, but so far no hard lock up.

Just an update. I'm a filthy liar. System still freezes, though infrequently. I keep my system on 247 and it's usually locked up by the time I wake up. The only program running is torrent client, no noteworthy pattern extrapolating from when download stopped.

Event log always list this warning prior to unexpected shutdown error log, but the warning can proceed shutdown by 5 minutes to an hour. Too headache, going to revert to the consumer preview and see if things resolve itself.

Event 219, Kernel-PNP
The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_GENERIC&PROD_FLASH_HS-COMBO&REV_5.14#000022272228&1#.

Same problem here.

I don't think it's the Video drivers as this Win8RP install I didn't install them and still got the system hang. It actually only happened after I installed Chrome so I think that's it.

Tried installing Stable version of chrome and that didn't help.

Have a MBP and under bootcamp exact same thing there; system hang after installing any version of Chrome.

Have uninstalled Chrome and using IE now to confirm.

I have this event but at startup, after the freeze and reboot, so I don't think it is directly related to the issue.

Yeah, I'm losing my mind diagnosing this issue. Clean reinstall last night without chrome, everything else configured. 20 hours without crash so far.

Possibly relevant info posted today. I'll try out the dev channel in a few days.

Daniel Chatfield

I am actually a Chromium author (although I do selectors and DOM traversing not rendering) and a buddy of mine at Google just told me that they are aware of an issue and that the fix (they still aren't sure whether it is completely fixed but believe so) is currently in the dev channel. I usually use Chrome Canary (which is before the dev channel in the release cycle) but the downloader was refusing to work when I installed windows 8.
The downloader is working now so hopefully using Chrome canary will fix the problem.

Windows 8 freezes - Microsoft Answers
I had the freezes whether Chrome was running or not. That combined with the fact that no user-mode program should be able to cause a system-wide crash means that even if the Chrome people find and fix whatever was triggering the bug, we still have to wait for Microsoft to issue a definitive fix. I ended up reverting to Consumer Preview after I got 3 consecutive freezes 5 minutes after boot.
