Windows 8 Pro to Core

Hi!

I have a little question. I have a Windows 8 Pro ISO file, and I want to convert it to a Windows 8 Core ISO file. Is that possible editing some files or something like that? It is difficult to find Windows 8 Core files for download, so I downloaded a Windows 8 Pro one, can I edit it to convert it to a Windows 8 Core? Thanks!

Which ISO do you have? I downloaded this one and it contains both Pro and Core editions --> en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso (SHA1: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4). Depending on which product key you use, it will either install the Pro or Core edition. When I used it to re-install the OS on my Acer laptop, that came with Windows 8 pre-installed, it found the product key embedded in the BIOS and installed the Core edition.

This is a new one on me, "Core Edition?" -I take it, it reads the BIOS and the BIOS tells it what version it is?

I think I know where is the problem. The key of the Windows is in the UEFI of the laptop, as you know. When I try to install the Windows it says that the key doesn't work for that version of Windows. It is strange because Windows 8 Pro Iso is supposed to contain the Core Iso too, but I think that it is beacause I have downloaded a iso that comes from an ESD folder. When I open the sources folder I find install.esd instead of install.wim. The iso I have to download is like this en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso , but the spanish version, the only problem is that I can't find it, only in torrents, which are really slow.

That sounds both good and bad - In other words, you don't have to worry about Activation, but, you can never change the version of Windows that is in there?

Juan: If that is the exact name of the disk, I can see if I can find it for you.

PS: It seems that sometimes, you can't buy the exact disk you need. You have to find someone else who has it who is gracious enough to burn you a copy or make an ISO image of it. For example, the version of Windows 7 I normally install is the original, with no SPs and no updates slipstreamed into it. I got the licences, but not the DISK, it got damaged. There is no buying the disk, I had to copy it from a friend.

D'oh I'm dumb - Fillup obviously has the exact disk Juan needs, but I don't know the policy here about sharing disks, I don't want to suggest anything that is against the policy of this BBS.

Thanks for the help! I think I finally got it. I am downloading es_windows_8_x64_dvd_915404.iso , which I think it is the correct one. If it doesn't work I have another option, I have managed to completely install my iso in legacy mode, without UEFI, and actívate it with the key manually. I am going to proof this new iso and I will tell you, but if it doesn't work there's no problem.

You can upgrade from 8 to 8 Pro by entering the Pro product code though the add features option once you're done with the initial install of 8 . I did that on my laptop and then used the same procedure to add media center. If the PC came with 8 Pro that's what gets installed. I don't imagine you could force an 8 core install on an 8 Pro PC but I don't know why you would want to anyway. 8 Pro has all the features 8 core does anyway. I can't confirm this as I haven't tried it myself, but I do believe if you installed from a store bought DVD, even if it is Pro, it will still auto detect the embedded product code and install the matching version. Unfortunately there are no official direct download links from Microsoft for Windows 8 ISO files. No free ones anyway. You can obtain them though TechNet or MSDN but you need a subscription for those. Anybody that posts links to other sources will likely have them removed by a moderator. It's unfortunate because there are people in need of just the install media for a clean install on an OEM PC. You can go to TechNet or MSDN and hunt up the MD5 hash codes and use those to compare with the ISO you may have obtained from another source to see if it has been altered.

It's not a problem. When you install from the DVD, it will install Windows 8 standard if that is what the machine indeed came with. You can then click the link to upgrade to a higher version of Windows and can supply the key code to go from 8 standard to 8 pro.

So, you found it? good. So, this version will read the BIOS and install CORE version. I hope it is the right one, I did a search and found a bunch of links to it, but I don't know the validity of any of the links.

That's the downside of having to go to bit torrent for the ISO. Has it been altered, in a bad way?

Just keep in mind that a virus scanned or malware scanned copy of Windows from a Torrent site might come back clean even if it has issues. These utilities only scan for problems that they know about and that have been identified in the wild. It's quite possible that the ISO of Windows you download has activation disabled or other random changes which would not be considered a virus or malware and thus pass those checks.

Most of the ones I have found are untouched. The only time I experimented with an outside activation, is was some kind of KMS emulator, like the ones that cracktivate Office 2010. It usually says on the file itself, if it has been altered that way, I believe this one is the pure OS installer

Hmm, the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso worked for me. All I did was go into the BIOS and change from UEFI to legacy mode and switch the boot order so it would boot from cd first. It didn't ask me for the KEY during install, and installed the Core edition automatically.

I just checked, and my sources folder contains install.wim. Did you check the Hash? The correct Hash for the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso is SHA1: 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4 . This is straight from Microsoft, so if the Hash matches you know it's legit and hasn't been tampered with.

So you did get it installed and activated? That's how I installed mine also....in Legacy mode with MBR formatted disk. I didn't want to use UEFI/GPT anyway. That's one of the reasons I re-installed clean to begin with. Some of the features of Acronis True Image, like Try and Decide and Startup Recovery Manager, wouldn't work with GPT disks.

well, the question is, can we ask Fillup to offer you his ISO if in fact his is the right version, in case the one you got does not work? cos we've already paid for the licences its just we are missing an actual ISO image.
