Solved windows 8 mic not recognised

Hi, I have just recently had this problem. I have a headset with a microphone attached, plugged into my laptop. The computer only recognises the headphones and not the microphone. The mic was working a couple of days ago, and suddenly stopped. I have looked everywhere and tried re-installing my sound drivers, trouble shoot, etc. When I go to my recording devices it says that the "jack mic" is not plugged in, but in playback devices, it recognises my headphones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
edit: The headphones have a single plug for both mic and sound, and i have tried another mic which did not work either.

The mic itself may have died. Is this a set where the headphones and mic use the same plug or are they separate plugs? If the latter is true, it may require some more configuration.

Sorry, should have mentioned that. It's a single plug for both, and I have tried another microphone which doesn't work either.

Fixed it.
I just upgraded to windows 10 and it decided to work. Guess I didn't upgrade the drivers properly or something.
