Hi
I am new user of win 8, I bought a lenovo laptop which has win 8 on it and is not activated. I want to install a SSD and do a clean install for win 8. I have previously done win 7 clean install. I have 2 questions. Is win8 clean install will be same as win7 clean install? Secondly in my previous laptop the win7 key was written on the microsoft sticker at the back of laptop but in this laptop there is no microsoft sticker at the back. So where would I get the win8 key?
thats all.
regards

The key it's embedded in the Bios, you don't even need to enter it during the install. It will find it automatically.

I think the Windows 8 in your new laptop is activated (genuine), check it out properly, since Lenevo always provides you with genuine version.

How do you say it's not activated?

If it's asking you for a key to install, that means that the ISO that you downloaded doesn't match the version that you are trying to install. For example, if you have a Windows 8 Enterprise ISO, it cannot use the Windows 8 Standard (or Professional) key that is embedded in your BIOS.

If it's asking you for a key to download, what site are you at? I'm not aware of a site where you can just download a copy of Windows 8.

Yes, I'm sure the copy that came with the unit is genuine

It is possible to clean install to a new hard drive. The trick is obtaining the install media. Most vendors only include a system recovery tool that puts the machine back the way that it came from the factory. With my Dells that I bought for work, there was an option to purchase the genuine reinstall media for just the OS, so I have obtained Windows 8 for my Dell OEM's from Dell.

For other machines that I have in my office that came with Windows 8 embedded (some Acer all in ones, and some Dell XPS 18's), I've used my copy of Windows that I have access to through my MSDN subscription.

Yes you can do a clean install, I've done it on my ASUS laptop that came with 8.0 Core. My TechNet 8.0 ISO read and used the embedded OEM key automatically and installed 8.0 Core. I wasn't prompted to enter a product code. You can also clean install 8.1 and activate with your 8.0 key. You have to use a generic 8.1 key to install with and then change key and activate with your 8.0 key.

The OEM Recovery disk set will restore the PC to factory condition. It will be like it was the first time you turned it on.

You could clean install Windows 7. You may need to find drivers for some of your hardware. Windows 7 won't use your embedded Windows 8 code so you'll need a legal Windows 7 Product code for it.
