What's new

Windows 8 is a one way street for consumer PC users

If you buy a Windows 8-powered HP consumer PC, or from any other PC vendor, you'll get no help from them if you decide you'd rather have Windows 7. And Linux? Forget about it!

PC companies call it downgrading, but many users just call it being sensible. You buy a new computer, and instead of using the bleeding edge operating system it came with, you move to an operating system you trust. With ordinary Windows 8 on Hewlett-Packard (HP) consumer PC, or any other vendor's retail PC, though, you're stuck with Windows 8.

how is this News?

What is new about that? If I buy a PC or any other device (i.e. car) that manufacturer will support it (whatever that support is worth... if I have a W7 problem I just use google...). but if I change it they won't support it. This is just natural.

I don't think Apple will help me if i use W8 on an Macintosh either, they help if i kept the original OSX (or whatever they use)

I don't remember a car manufacturer supporting my car (meaning warranty) if I flash the chip to get more horsepower out of it.

They sell me a W8 PC and if i alter it and install a new OS, this new OS is my problem, not theirs.

I can't imagine anyone here on the forum who is selling PCs for a living supports the PC they built for other people if they screw it up by installing some other OS, or flashing a ROM ec. (unless they are just really friendly...)

Edit: and someone who buys HP/Dell PCs doesn't down or upgrade anyway... those people don't even know that there are different versions of Windows and probably think the PC itself is " made by windows", not HP. Someone who can deal with Linux, for sure can order a few pieces of hardware on Newegg and just put a PC together himself anyway. this seems a moot point.

It's not new, 4-5 years ago when someone purchase a Dell with Vista, you can't find XP drivers on their website, it was not supported

That makes no sense to purchase a Windows 8 PC and then downgrade to Windows 7.............

Don't like windows 8... that's ok... don't buy a Windows 8 PC.

Or

Purchase a new PC with Windows 8 and a boxed version of Windows 7. The you will have support. Will cost you more.

Be aware they are talking about Windows 8 Core which is the default OS on these PCs. Windows 8 Pro does have downgrade rights but to get it you have to pay HP $70 to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro when you buy the system. Some vendors still offer Windows 7 and can for the next 2 years. So watch the specs and be sure you know what you are getting.

The answer is simple.

Get your machine from a manufacturer who cares about their customers and does help them to use win7 if they prefer.

For the price of a new Windows 8 PC, I'd rather just learn the new UI versus paying more out of pocket for Windows 7. As good as 7 is, it's not great like 8! :D

If I encounter people that come to me saying that they are confused about Windows 8 after buying a new PC (after the holidays I expect) knowing what I know about Windows 8, I'd rather just de-confuse them versus having them pay for Windows 7 or have to install Classic Shell and just blow over the Start Screen and not helping them to learn it.

In that case I would have bought it when the computers were still windows 7 based. It doesn't even make sense if you are getting a computer installed with windows 8 and there is no dvd or cd for windows 7 of course they wouldn't help you. They are not obligated to help you, even if they should. I personally would go with the windows 8 if I already bought it. Why go out of your way to pay for the expensive windows 7. It's even more pointless if they are buying a touch screen computer as windows 8 would work better still not ideal when working with touch on the desktop but it's definitely a step up from windows 7, at least touch-wise.

Apple !, yes I think you are right, when peoples purchase an Apple or an HP, they are looking for a one package solution, Hardware and OS. .honestly if you are a little bit teksavvy, you will not purchase an HP, the upgrade path is too limited.
