Hello.

Please help. I am extremely frustrated.

Problem: Internet (wifi) is extremely slow, for weeks on end.

Background and specifics of problem: I purchased a Lenovo k330B this fall. It came with windows 7 installed. For the 6 or so weeks using windows 7 never encountered any issues with internet. Upgraded to windows 8 at official release, upgrade went fine. Internet worked as usual for first couple of weeks. Out of the blue, internet started acting up. Very slow speeds. Two other computers with windows 7 connected to the same router, continued to work perfectly. Researched and researched without results, then suddenly internet started working again.

Weird.

Fast forward a month or so and boom, internet starts acting up again. Internet unbearably slow. Takes 5 minutes to load google news, etc. Can't find a solution. After hours of trying random fixes, turn off live updates (which in my mind should not be causing the problem) and it seems to start working again. Everything is working well again for about a month... Fast forward, 3-4 weeks, until yesterday and boom... Internet not working correctly again.

No clue. Things to keep in mind: My other two windows 7 laptops never have had any issues, even when the windows 8 machine is not functioning properly. The wireless drivers are up to date. I switched anti-virus between first and second occurrences, so it isn't my AV causing problems. Wireless signal strength is strong. Network resource monitor shows no unusual network activity. Restarting computer/power cycling modem/router do nothing (slow from startup). This problem exists with all browsers. Also, once in a while if a page is just sitting there trying to load, if I stop and reload it, the page will load quick... But this only happens a small percentage of the time, most times if I stop and reload it just tries to reload and doesn't load or does so very slowly.

Please help.

Computer literacy: Medium

Computer: Lenovo IdeaCentre K330B 7747-2AU
Wireless: Realtek RTL8818CE
Router: Netgear wpn824v3 (I really don't think the router is part of the problem)

Sincerely, thank you in advance for any help!

The A/V's are still causing the problem, remove them both using the special uninstall tool for which ever A/V you have installed.

There were three other Lenovo users here with the same problems this week.

Which A/V software is this?

I'd have to see a screen shot of the ipconfig/all and a screen shot of Xirrus read out to find out more.

Can you try going into Device Manager and disable the Msoft Virtual WiFi adaptor.

After that you should go into your routers manual wireless settings and change the wireless channel to "1" for now' as it appears both you and your neighbor are both using channel 6.

It also appears you are using the old standard wireless 802.11g although your network adaptor can use Wireless N which should work better for you.

Try going into your routers wireless settings and change to 802.11n Only in the routers wireless setup page.

The link below shows you where to go to adjust the wireless profile in Windows 8.

Try out those settings and report back in after testing please. :)

I don't see this anywhere in my Device Manager. Is the "Msoft Virtual Wifi adaptor" = Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter?

Under Device Manager>Network Adapters I see: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Connection, Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter, and Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN

After that you should go into your routers manual wireless settings and change the wireless channel to "1" for now' as it appears both you and your neighbor are both using channel 6.

Did this, had no effect.

Try going into your routers wireless settings and change to 802.11n Only in the routers wireless setup page.

I'm not seeing this as an option either. I can change to the following modes: b, g, b+g, or Auto108 mbps. Would a router issue be in line with the issue I am seeing? (Both other machines working flawless, and this computer working flawless for weeks on end?)

Once again - thank you very much for trying to help me through this. I truly appreciate it.

Yes the debug adaptor is the one to disable, it shows up in the ipconfig/all as Msoft Virtual WiFi miniport adaptor so that's what I call it and it needs to be disabled completely. You will see it there in Device Manager>under Network adaptors.

It's hard to believe that changing the channel had no effect because you and your neighbor were both using the same channel.

Your router may not be capable of working with Wireless N, this tells me that you should either update the firmware on the router or try using a more modern router because anything that is still using wireless G is seriously outdated and won't be giving you good performance. Your wireless adaptor can work with wireless N but the router can't from what I'm seeing.

I can't say why your connection worked good at first then degraded, problems like that are nearly impossible to track down but it's possible that an installed program or software is causing this problem.

You might even considering performing a reset or refresh of the Op system to take it all back to square one.

Ok. I disabled the debug adaptor, no help.

I am assuming that the wireless adaptor and the router not being able to work well together wouldn't be the issue because they worked together fine before. That being said, I may take your advice and upgrade my router anyway.

I can't say why your connection worked good at first then degraded, problems like that are nearly impossible to track down but it's possible that an installed program or software is causing this problem.

Yeah, not only that, it worked well, degraded, worked well, degraded, worked well, then degraded (where I am at now).

You might even considering performing a reset or refresh of the Op system to take it all back to square one.

I may just throw windows 8 out and go back to windows 7...Or at this point I may just throw my computer out the window.

Thanks again for the help. If you (or anyone out there) can think of anything else I can try, let me know

Is your PC up to date (Service pack updates, Network Client updates, Adaptor Driver updates, etc.)? It seems that some Lenovo PC's had Network Client issues as well as interference problems. Sounds most likely to be an interference problem if nothing chev65 worked.

Try this:

Open Device Manager
Open the network adapter (in my case Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230)
Click Power Management
Clear the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Worked for me. Best of luck.

Problem persists, but new information.

So I did some more searching and am still at a loss. I found out that if I connect to my phone (while set up as a wireless hotspot) I get the full 4g speeds (13/14 Mbps). This made me think that, as suggested, perhaps a new router would do the trick. (even though it didn't make sense to me because the router DID work perfectly for a long period of time with this comp).

So, I search for a good deal on a router and buy a newer linksys. I hook it up and connect perfectly with my windows 7 laptop, 12-15Mbps download, I then try out my W8 desktop and cross my fingers. Well, it works WAY better than before, but I am still only getting 3-4Mbps download. Confused, I am. But I am OK with this because I can at least browse the internet.

BUT THEN... Fast forward a week and BOOM. The stupid thing stops working. Back to the same thing I had with the previous router and problems I have been describing in this thread. Download speed won't top 1 Mbps. And now it is even disconnecting (didn't do that before) and right now, I can't get more than .25Mbps. Also, if I connect to my phone, I still get perfect speeds.

And weeks later I am still super frustrated.

Overview. Original router - worked fine for long time, started to not work as well, then worked well again, then stopped working well at all. New router - worked decent for a week, started acting like first router, not working.

Any other suggestions?

Which anti virus software did you have on this machine, I'm still unclear on that.

The 802.11n Only setting may work better on the new router but I'd have to see the Xirrus read out to confirm the settings.

That certainly is a strange problem with the routers working then not working.

Anti-Virus was at first McAfee. Then later and now it is Norton AV. I have completely uninstalled Norton and problem persists. And since re-installed.

Now you are using wireless 802.11 N which is good. The signal isn't too strong but should be ok.

With the two open networks on channel 6 and 1 you should try changing to channel 11.

I'm curious about which DNS servers you are using. Are the DNS server IP's typed into the routers network settings? If you can change them Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 it might help.

As for McAfee, If you haven't yet, try running the MCPR uninstall tool in the link which is about half way down the page.
How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR)

Norton has one also.

I'm not sure I completely understand.

Following your link, I have downloaded all of those drivers. Including the realtek networking driver. I don't see any Atheros drivers? Maybe I am missing something?

The Lenovo site showed an Atheros driver but maybe it's a Realtek on your model.

You could be picking up interference from a phone or the position in the room relative to the router could be a problem. These types of problems keep coming up and more so with Lenovo it seems.

I find it best to set up the DNS servers on the router.
