Windows 8 gremlins

Same here, same here. Froze as soon as I tried to watch a video.

I've noticed that most freezing, in Windows 7, happens when the computer does an overwhelming amount of tasks at the same time. A few days ago, I could get it to freeze several times within an hour, by just making it do "too much".

I haven't checked back here due to playing too much D3, and ironically enough, it seems that D3 actually has managed to keep my computer running.
I just installed the release preview, and so far so good for me... I had to reinstall due to some language errors, but other than that, I'm setting things up and it's been going well. It seems that the graphics drivers that I was having weren't behaving well, so I reverted back to old drivers from ~2 years ago that had been working well for me. In case you want to try it out, the version is 258.96.
Planning on leaving the computer running overnight to see how it fares. I haven't been as unlucky as the rest of you *crosses fingers*

It's so bad on the release preview that I can't even get that driver downloaded before my computer either freezes or blue screens. I'm posting this from my android tablet because it would have crashed before I could post if I tried on my laptop. This is the kind of issue that shouldn't have made it past the developer preview, but here we are, on the equivalent of a release candidate and we still have basic functionality issues on some machines. I really hope MS reads this thread and takes action because if we get to a release and this thing still doesn't work, I'll just move my laptop to Linux Mint or something. I can still get Minecraft on that so it isn't a major loss...

I'm surprised you're having that many issues - mine has been working flawlessly now for a while. I got most things installed, and it's been running fine all day.

And you have the same Dell Studio XPS 1340 model that I have?

Like I said, I wasn't able to switch to the drivers that you have on your video card because my computer keeps freezing while it is downloading. I'm back in my apartment so my faster internet connection might be enough to get it down in time.

I did disable the video card drivers (is reverted back to whatever generic driver Microsoft provided). When I did that, it still frequently blue-screened and froze, just like it was in my original post in this thread.

Another Dell Studio XPS 13/M1330 owner checking in - I'm experiencing exactly the same issue with the Release Preview. Windows 7 is running fine on the same hardware.

Holy crap, it seems to be working! For now...
Been working all day, including video playback (which nearly never works).

I'm super-excited! :)

You're channelling Sinofsky beautifully :)

How's it working after a couple of days?

I've had NO PROBLEMS (regarding the notorious freezing) since I last wrote! What a relief! Yay!

I would just like to say that I haven't had any problems with Windows 8 thus far and if I did, and I couldn't fix it myself, I would seek the advice and know how from Gman.I think that some of the posters in this thread have aimed their frustrations in the wrong direction.a) Microsoft is not responsible for drivers on outdated equipment that was never intended to run their latest OSb) Dell never said when they sold you your laptop that when microsoft release another OS we are going to sort out all your problemsc) Individual device manufacturers (ie Ricoh and Nvidia) have neither the time nor the inclination to rewrite drivers for your outdated laptopSo if YOU'VE got a problem with your installation of a new OS on an old laptop then there is no point in venting anger towards any of the above and if that doesn't suit you then you have the option not to try out the Beta software in the end.I am merely stating my opinion and wish no ill towards any of you, and incidentally I wish that you all sort your problems out because I believe thatat Win 8 is a fantastic upgrade.

I've reinstalled the Windows 8 Release Preview on my laptop and the 'disabledynamictick' trick seems to work for me, too. Glad it's solved.
