If those numbers are only Windows operating systems, then the real news is:
~3x as many people are still using versions of Windows that pre-date XP (compared to W8)!

I have a Pentium 3 with Win98 SE in the spare room just for running
a few older games that won't talk to an OS any later than Win ME and
don't work in compatibility mode. Think early Codies stuff such as the

Reported to be?

By whom?

Sounds like a press release regurgitated.

Another article on the site is better balanced - although whether Metro is beautiful is a matter of opinion.

That's unfair.
Somebody spent a lot of time and money making the add-on as ugly as possible (re-imagining). ;)

It seems like MS couldn't market a nutritious meal to a staving man.
Why didn't they include a full-motion video tile on the Metro screen (in the CP)?
It wouldn't even have had to do anything useful.

Yes, I run all my DOS games and Win 3.1/Office 4.5 in DOS-Box.

Never got around to trying Win 95/98/ME there, though.

A project for a (coming) cold winter evening, perhaps?

I do have Win ME in VirtualBox, it's fine for apps but useless for gaming.

Hi there
WHERE do those stats come from --chapter and verse please.

It's difficult enough to find out how many copies of Windows (of any flavour) are even sold in a relatively small place like Guernsey (Channel Islands off the UK - near Cherbourg France) so how in the world does this type of company quoting these stats like it's Gospel Truth get accurate data -- and where do they get it from - and if they CAN do it maybe they should form an alliance with tax collection agencies in various parts of the world. (That hopefully will never happen !!).

Cheers

With most users on the internet it is quite easy to query webservers to discover what browser, and OS version attempts to access a web page. It is a measure of activity rather than market share though.

Google is rather well known for keeping user stats:

Google Trends: vista, windows 7,windows 8

Most other web stats collectors do not record Windows 8 yet:

StatCounter Global Stats - Browser, OS, Search Engine including Mobile Market Share

But a line in their FAQ makes me doubt the accuracy or quality control of their stats:

FAQ | StatCounter Global Stats

In January 2012, our global sample consisted of 18.1 billion hits (US: 4.4 billion); 2.6 billion of these were search engine referrals (US: 575 million); 272 million of these were social media referrals (US: 598 million).

Likewise, it is impossible to tell how many computers are using the different OS's available. Most counting is done by measuring internet activity, which will favor newer operating systems.

I recall that after it was announced that 7 had finally passed XP, someone else did a survey and found that the number of computers loaded with XP still exceeded the number loaded with 7. But the older XP machines were often for office use and rarely went on the internet. And here in Mexico, the schools and charities still have many Win 98 computers for educational programs and that do not go onto the web.

Hi there
all these stats are really meaningless drivel

For instance is a "Virtual Machine" running some flavour of windows interpreted as "Windows". Many VM's are run in test mode and Windows is never activated -- for shortish tests you don't need to activate windows - it gives you time before expiration -- and what about corporate versions which don't need activation anyway (W7 / W8 Enterprise version).

What about those that rarely use the Internet or don't use Google when they do.

I think Ms's sales dept is a better and more reliable indicator.

Maybe, if they didn't get creative with telling us about the hard figures. "Windows 8 usage is now more than double that of 7 at the same point in the beta stage" as they've already Tweeted, or very similar. :what:

The problem with using the sales number, Jimbo, is that you don't know how many of those programs are still being used. How many computers are still using Win 95? Far less than the sales numbers.

This just shows how meaningless the whole discussion is -- let's face it NOBODY KNOWS.

I'd still think that Ms's A/R (Accounts Receivable in "Old Fashioned Speak") will be a reliable indicator.

A fraction of the popularity ...

There have been several articles pointing out that less people are using W8 compared to W7 at the same stage of its release cycle.

According to NetMarketShare:
  • Windows 7 had a 1% market share at the 1st of September 2009.
  • Windows 8 has a 0.25% market share (currently)

It's now the 4th most widely used Windows OS (according to NetMarketShare).
Market share for mobile, browsers, operating systems and search engines | NetMarketShare
Operating system market share

The W8 (Betas) only have a fraction of the popularity that the W7 (Betas) enjoyed (according to NetMarketShare).
